What does the Bible say about rest?
Rest in the Bible is not laziness. It is trust made visible: stopping because God is God and you are not. From sabbath to Jesus’ invitation to the weary, Scripture treats rest as a gift and a command — a way of remembering that the world does not sit on your shoulders.
Key verses
- Matthew 11:28Jesus invites the weary and burdened to come to him and find rest.
- Exodus 20:8-10Remember the sabbath day and keep it holy; six days you labor, and one day you stop.
- Psalm 23:2The Lord makes his people lie down in green pastures and leads them beside still waters.
- Hebrews 4:9-11A sabbath rest remains for the people of God; strive to enter that rest.
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.Biblical rest is more than a nap. It is ceasing the anxious management of your own life long enough to be a creature again. Jesus does not praise exhaustion as holiness. He calls the heavy-laden to himself, and he gives rest rather than another assignment.
