Exodus 14

1Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying.

2Command the sons of Israel to return and camp before Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, facing Baal-zephon; set up camp across from it beside the sea.

3Pharaoh will say that the sons of Israel are entangled in the land, the wilderness having shut them in.

4I will strengthen Pharaoh's heart, and he will chase after them; I will be glorified over Pharaoh and over all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am Yahweh. And they did so.

5It was reported to the king of Egypt that the people had fled; Pharaoh and his servants' hearts turned against the people, and they said, "What have we done in releasing Israel from our service?"

6He harnessed his chariot and took his people with him.

7He took six hundred select chariots and all the chariots of Egypt, with captains over all of them.

8Yahweh hardened the heart of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and he pursued the sons of Israel, while the sons of Israel went out with an upraised hand.

9The Egyptians pursued them and overtook them as they camped beside the sea—all Pharaoh's horses and chariots, his horsemen, and his army—at Pi-hahiroth, opposite Baal-zephon.

10When Pharaoh approached, the sons of Israel raised their eyes, and there were the Egyptians advancing after them; they were greatly afraid, and the sons of Israel cried out to Yahweh.

11They said to Moses, "Was it for lack of graves in Egypt that you took us to die in the wilderness? What have you done to us by bringing us out from Egypt?"

12Isn't this the thing we said to you in Egypt: "Leave us to serve the Egyptians"? For it is better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.

13Moses said to the people, "Do not fear. Stand firm and see Yahweh's deliverance, which he will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you will see them no more forever."

14Yahweh will fight for you, and you shall be silent.

15Yahweh said to Moses, “Why are you crying to me? Speak to the sons of Israel, that they set out.”

16You, raise your staff and extend your hand over the sea to part it, and the Israelites shall enter the midst of the sea on dry ground.

17Look, I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they will come after them, and I will gain glory from Pharaoh, from all his army, from his chariots, and from his horsemen.

18The Egyptians will know that I am Yahweh when I am glorified over Pharaoh, over his chariots, and over his horsemen.

19The angel of God who had been going before Israel's camp moved and went behind them, and the pillar of cloud moved from before them and stood behind them.

20It came between the Egyptians' camp and Israel's camp and was cloud and darkness that lit up the night, so one did not approach the other all night.

21Moses extended his hand over the sea, and Yahweh drove the sea back by a fierce east wind all night, turning the sea into dry ground as the waters parted.

22The sons of Israel entered the middle of the sea on dry land, and the waters were a wall to them on their right and on their left.

23The Egyptians pursued and entered after them into the midst of the sea—all Pharaoh's horses, his chariots, and his horsemen.

24During the morning watch, Yahweh looked down upon the Egyptian army from the pillar of fire and cloud, and threw the Egyptian army into confusion.

25Yahweh removed the wheels of their chariots, and they drove them heavily; the Egyptians said, "Let us flee from before Israel, for Yahweh fights for them against the Egyptians."

26Yahweh said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea, and the waters will return upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen.”

27Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to its full strength as morning dawned, while the Egyptians fled toward it; Yahweh overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea.

28The waters returned and covered the chariots and the horsemen—all Pharaoh's army following them into the sea; not even one remained among them.

29The children of Israel walked on dry ground in the middle of the sea, and the waters stood as a wall to them on their right and on their left.

30Yahweh saved Israel that day from the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore.

31Israel saw the mighty hand that Yahweh had wielded against the Egyptians, and the people feared Yahweh and believed in Yahweh and his servant Moses.
