Exodus 34

1Yahweh said to Moses, "Cut two stone tablets like the first ones, and I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke."

2Be ready by morning, go up in the morning to Mount Sinai, and station yourself there for me on the mountain's summit.

3No man shall go up with you; neither shall any man appear anywhere on the mountain; neither shall the flocks or herds graze before that mountain.

4Moses chiseled two stone tablets like the first ones, rose early in the morning, and climbed Mount Sinai as Yahweh had commanded him, taking the two stone tablets in his hand.

5Yahweh descended in the cloud and stationed himself with him there, proclaiming the name Yahweh.

6Yahweh passed before his face and proclaimed, "Yahweh, Yahweh, compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness."

7Preserves steadfast love for thousands, bears iniquity, transgression, and sin, but leaves no one innocent, bringing the iniquity of fathers upon children and children's children to the third and fourth generations.

8Moses hurried and bowed his head to the ground and worshiped.

9He said, "If now I have found favor in your eyes, Lord, please let the Lord go among us, for it is a stiff-necked people; forgive our iniquity and our sin, and claim us as your inheritance."

10He said, “See, I am making a covenant right in front of your whole people; I will perform wonders such as have never been done anywhere on earth or among any nation, and all the people in whose midst you are will see Yahweh’s deed, because it is a fearsome thing that I am doing with you.”

11Take heed to what I command you today. See, I will drive out from before you the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite.

12Be on your guard, lest you make a covenant with those dwelling in the land into which you are coming, lest it become a snare among you.

13For you shall break down their altars, shatter their pillars, and cut down their Asherim.

14for you shall not prostrate yourself before any other god, because Yahweh—Jealous is his name—is a jealous God.

15Lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they prostitute themselves after their gods and offer sacrifices to their gods, and one calls you and you eat from his sacrifice.

16and you take their daughters for your sons, and their daughters play the harlot after their gods, and make your sons play the harlot after their gods.

17Do not make molten gods for yourself.

18Observe the festival of unleavened bread. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, as I commanded you, at the set time in the month of Abib; for in the month of Abib you came out from Egypt.

19Every firstborn that opens the womb belongs to me, and every male among your livestock—the firstborn of oxen and sheep.

20A donkey's firstborn you shall redeem with a lamb; if you do not redeem it, then break its neck. Every firstborn among your sons you shall redeem, and none shall come before me empty.

21Six days you shall work, and on the seventh day you shall rest—in plowing and in harvest you shall rest.

22You shall keep the Festival of Weeks with the firstfruits of the wheat harvest, and the Festival of Ingathering at the year's end.

23Three times a year all your males shall appear before the Lord Yahweh, God of Israel.

24For I will drive nations from before you and enlarge your borders, nor will any man covet your land when you go up to appear before Yahweh your God three times in the year.

25You shall not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leaven, nor shall the sacrifice of the Passover feast remain until morning.

26You shall bring the first of your ground's firstfruits to the house of Yahweh your God. You shall not boil a kid in its mother's milk.

27Yahweh said to Moses, "Write these words, for according to the mouth of these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel."

28He was there with Yahweh forty days and forty nights; he ate no bread and drank no water. He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the ten words.

29When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand, as he descended from the mountain, he did not realize that the skin of his face shone from speaking with him.

30Aaron and all the sons of Israel saw Moses, and look, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to approach him.

31Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the rulers of the congregation returned to him, and Moses spoke to them.

32Afterward all the children of Israel approached, and he commanded them all that Yahweh had spoken with him on Mount Sinai.

33When Moses finished speaking with them, he put a veil over his face.

34Whenever Moses entered before Yahweh to speak with him, he removed the veil until he came out; he came out and spoke to the sons of Israel whatever he was commanded.

35The sons of Israel saw Moses's face, for the skin of Moses's face shone, and Moses put the veil back on his face until he entered to speak with him.
