Exodus 28

1Bring your brother Aaron and his sons with him near to you from among the sons of Israel, so he may serve me as priest: Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron's sons.

2You shall make sacred garments for Aaron your brother, for glory and beauty.

3You shall speak to all the wise of heart whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom, that they make Aaron's garments to consecrate him for serving me as priest.

4These are the garments they shall make: a breastplate, an ephod, a robe, an embroidered coat, a mitre, and a girdle; they shall make consecrated garments for Aaron your brother and his sons, to serve me as priests.

5They shall take gold, blue, purple, scarlet, and fine linen.

6They shall make the ephod of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet, and fine twisted linen, the work of a skilled craftsman.

7It shall have two shoulder pieces joined to its two edges, and it shall be joined together.

8The ephod's skillfully woven band, which lies on it, shall match its craftsmanship and come from the same cloth: gold, blue, purple, scarlet, and fine twisted linen.

9You shall take two onyx stones and engrave on them the names of the sons of Israel.

10Six of their names on the one stone, and the names of the six remaining on the second stone, according to their generations.

11With a stone engraver's skill like signet engravings, engrave the two stones according to the names of Israel's sons, and set them in gold settings.

12You shall place the two stones on the shoulders of the ephod as memorial stones for Israel's sons, and Aaron shall bear their names before Yahweh on his two shoulders for a memorial.

13You shall make gold settings.

14You shall make two chains of pure gold at the ends as corded work, and you shall put the corded chains on the settings.

15You shall make a judgment breastplate, a designer's work—like the work of the ephod; you shall make it of gold, blue, purple, scarlet, and fine twisted linen.

16It shall be square and doubled, a span in its length and a span in its width.

17You shall set in it a setting of stones, four rows of stones: the row sardius, topaz, and carbuncle—the first row.

18And the second row: emerald, sapphire, and diamond.

19And the third row: ligure, agate, and amethyst.

20And the fourth row: a beryl, an onyx, and a jasper, set in gold in their settings.

21The stones shall bear the names of Israel's sons, twelve matching their names, engraved like signets, each with his name, for the twelve tribes.

22You shall make twisted cord-work chains of pure gold on the breastplate.

23You shall make two gold rings on the breastplate and put the two rings on the two ends of the breastplate.

24You shall put the two gold cords on the two rings at the ends of the breastplate.

25You shall put the two ends of the two cords on the two settings, and put them on the shoulders of the ephod toward its front.

26You shall make two rings of gold and put them on the two ends of the breastplate, on its edge toward the inner side of the ephod.

27You shall make two gold rings and put them on the two shoulder pieces of the ephod underneath, toward its front, beside its coupling, above the waistband of the ephod.

28They shall bind the breastplate by its rings to the rings of the ephod with a blue cord, so that it rests on the band of the ephod, and the breastplate does not slip off the ephod.

29Aaron shall bear the names of Israel's sons in the judgment breastplate over his heart when he enters the holy place, as a memorial before Yahweh continually.

30You shall place the Urim and the Thummim into the judgment breastplate, and they shall rest on Aaron's heart when he enters before Yahweh; Aaron shall carry the judgment of Israel's sons on his heart before Yahweh always.

31You shall make the robe of the ephod entirely blue.

32It shall have an opening for the head in its midst, and a binding around its opening—the work of a weaver—like the opening of a coat of mail, so that it is not torn.

33You shall make pomegranates of blue, purple, and scarlet on its hems all around, and bells of gold between them all around.

34a golden bell and a pomegranate, a golden bell and a pomegranate, on the skirts of the robe all around.

35It shall be on Aaron to serve, and its sound shall be heard when he enters the holy place before Yahweh and when he comes out, so he does not die.

36You shall make a plate of pure gold and engrave on it engravings of a signet, "Holy to Yahweh."

37You shall put it on a blue cord, and it shall be on the turban, on the front of the turban.

38It will be on Aaron's forehead, and Aaron will bear the iniquity of the holy things that the children of Israel consecrate in all their sacred gifts; it will be continually on his forehead, to gain their acceptance before Yahweh.

39You shall embroider the fine linen tunic, and you shall make a fine linen turban, and you shall make a sash of embroidered work.

40You shall make tunics for Aaron's sons, and you shall make sashes for them, and you shall make headdresses for them, for glory and beauty.

41You shall put them on Aaron your brother and his sons with him, anoint them, fill their hands, sanctify them, and they shall be priests for me.

42You shall make linen breeches for them to cover their naked flesh, reaching from their loins to their thighs.

43They shall be on Aaron and his sons when they enter the tent of meeting or approach the altar to serve in the sanctuary, lest they bear iniquity and die; it is an eternal statute for him and his offspring after him.
