Exodus 22

1If a man steals an ox or a sheep and slaughters it or sells it, he shall repay five oxen for the ox and four sheep for the sheep.

2If a thief is found breaking in and struck so he dies, there is no bloodguilt for him.

3If the sun has risen upon him, bloodguilt falls on him; he shall fully repay. If he has nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft.

4If the stolen property is certainly found alive in his hand, whether ox, donkey, or sheep, he shall pay double.

5If a man causes a field or vineyard to be grazed and turns his grazing beast loose, and it grazes another's field, he shall make restitution from the best of his field and the best of his vineyard.

6If fire breaks out and catches thorns so that it consumes a stack, or the standing grain, or the field, the one who kindled the fire shall make full restitution.

7If a man entrusts his neighbor with silver or goods to guard, and it is stolen from the man's house, if the thief is found, he shall repay double.

8If the thief is not found, the owner of the house shall be brought before God if he has not put his hand into his neighbor's property.

9For any matter of transgression, whether involving an ox, donkey, sheep, garment, or any lost possession, where someone declares, "This is mine," the dispute between the two parties shall come before God; the one God declares guilty shall repay double to his fellow.

10If a man gives his neighbor a donkey, an ox, a sheep, or any beast to keep, and it dies or is injured or driven away, with no one seeing.

11An oath of Yahweh shall be between them both if he has not put his hand to his neighbor's property; its owner shall accept it, and he shall not repay.

12But if it is stolen from him, he shall repay its owner.

13If it is torn, he shall bring it as evidence; he shall not make good what was torn.

14And if a man borrows from his neighbor and it breaks or dies, its owner not being with it, he shall repay in full.

15If its owner is with it, he shall not repay. If it is hired, it came for its hire.

16If a man seduces an unbetrothed virgin and sleeps with her, he must surely pay her bride-price to make her his wife.

17If her father utterly refuses to give her to him, he shall pay silver according to the dowry for virgins.

18Do not let a sorceress live.

19Whoever lies with an animal shall surely be put to death.

20Whoever sacrifices to gods other than Yahweh alone shall be destroyed.

21Do not wrong a sojourner, nor oppress him, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.

22You shall not mistreat any widow or orphan.

23If you afflict him at all, for if he cries out to me at all, I will surely hear his cry.

24My anger will burn, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives will be widows, and your children orphans.

25If you lend money to a poor person among my people near you, do not become his creditor, nor impose interest upon him.

26If you take your neighbor's garment as a pledge, return it to him before the sun sets.

27For it is his only covering, it is his garment for his skin—what will he sleep in? When he cries to me, I will hear, for I am gracious.

28You shall not revile God, nor curse a ruler of your people.

29Do not delay your fruit and your liquor. You shall give the firstborn of your sons to me.

30So you shall do with your oxen and your sheep: seven days it shall stay with its mother, but on the eighth day you shall give it to me.

31You shall be holy men to me, and you shall not eat flesh torn in the field; you shall throw it to the dogs.
