Exodus 17

All the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin by their journey stages, according to Yahweh's command, and encamped in Rephidim; but there was no water for the people to drink.

The people contended with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.” Moses said to them, “Why do you contend with me? Why do you test Yahweh?”

The people thirsted there for water, the people grumbled against Moses, and said, "Why this? Have you brought us up from Egypt to kill us, our children, and our livestock with thirst?"

Moses cried out to Yahweh, saying, "What shall I do with this people? A little more and they will stone me."

Yahweh said to Moses, "Go ahead of the people, take some elders of Israel with you, and take your staff in your hand—the one with which you struck the Nile—and go."

See, I stand before you there on the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and waters will come out from it so the people can drink. Moses did so in the sight of Israel's elders.

He named the place Massah and Meribah because of the Israelites' quarreling and their testing Yahweh, saying, "Is Yahweh among us, or not?"

Amalek came and fought against Israel at Rephidim.

Moses said to Joshua, "Choose men for us, go out, and fight Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the hilltop with God's rod in my hand."

Joshua did as Moses instructed him and fought Amalek, and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

When Moses raised his hand, Israel prevailed, and when he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed.

Moses' hands grew heavy, so they took a stone and placed it beneath him, and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other. His hands remained steady until sunset.

Joshua overpowered Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

Yahweh said to Moses, "Write this memorial in a book, and recite it in the ears of Joshua, for I will surely blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven."

Moses built an altar and called its name Yahweh My Banner.

For he said, "A hand upon the throne of Yah: war for Yahweh against Amalek from generation to generation."
