Genesis 25

1Abraham took another wife whose name was Keturah.

2She bore Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah to him.

3Jokshan fathered Sheba and Dedan, and Dedan's sons were Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim.

4And Midian's sons, Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah, were all sons of Keturah.

5Abraham gave all that was his to Isaac.

6But to the sons of the concubines Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts and sent them away from Isaac his son while he was still alive, eastward to the land of the east.

7These were the days of the years of Abraham's life that he lived: a hundred years, seventy years, and five years.

8Abraham breathed his last and died at a good old age, an elder fully satisfied, and was gathered to his people.

9Isaac and Ishmael, his sons, buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron son of Zohar the Hittite, which is before Mamre.

10The field that Abraham bought from the sons of Heth—there Abraham and Sarah his wife were buried.

11After Abraham's death, God blessed his son Isaac, and Isaac settled at Beer-lahai-roi.

12These are the generations of Ishmael, Abraham's son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's maidservant, bore to Abraham.

13These are the names of Ishmael's sons, name by name birth by birth: Nebaioth his firstborn, Kedar, Adbeel, and Mibsam.

14Mishma, Dumah, and Massa

15Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah.

16These are Ishmael's sons, and these are their names in their villages and encampments: twelve chieftains according to their peoples.

17These were the years of Ishmael's life: a hundred and thirty-seven years. He breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people.

18They settled from Havilah to Shur, before Egypt as you go toward Assyria. He died in the presence of all his brothers.

19These are Isaac's generations, Abraham's son. Abraham fathered Isaac.

20Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah, daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of Paddan-aram and sister of Laban the Aramean, as his wife.

21Isaac entreated Yahweh on behalf of his wife because she was barren. Yahweh was entreated by him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.

22The sons jostled within her, and she said, "If it is so, why am I this way?" and she went to inquire of Yahweh.

23Yahweh said to her, "Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples will divide from your body; one people will be stronger than another, and the greater will serve the younger."

24When her days to give birth were fulfilled, behold, twins were in her womb.

25The first came out ruddy all over, like a garment of hair, and they called his name Esau.

26After that his brother came out, his hand grasping Esau's heel, and his name was called Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them.

27The boys grew up, and Esau became a man who knew hunting, a man of the field, and Jacob a quiet man dwelling in tents.

28Isaac loved Esau because he ate his game; Rebekah loved Jacob.

29Jacob cooked stew. Esau came from the field, and he was weary.

30Esau said to Jacob, "Please feed me some of that same red, for I am faint." Therefore his name was called Edom.

31Jacob said, "Sell me your birthright today."

32Esau said, "Look, I'm going to die. What is this birthright to me?"

33Jacob said, "Swear to me today." So he swore to him and sold his birthright to Jacob.

34Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew. He ate and drank, got up, and went away. Esau thus despised his birthright.
