Bible answers

What does the Bible say about angels?

The Bible presents angels as real, created spirits who serve God. They carry out his word, bring messages, protect his people, and rejoice when a sinner repents. Scripture also sets clear limits. Angels are servants, not saviors, and they refuse worship. People do not become angels when they die. And Satan can disguise himself as an angel of light, so not every bright spiritual experience comes from God.

Hebrews 1:14 · Lumin Translation

Angels show up at turning points in the Bible: with Abraham, at the burning bush, in Daniel’s den, at the birth and empty tomb of Jesus. What stands out is how little attention they draw to themselves. Their message is always about God. When John fell down before one in Revelation, the angel stopped him at once: I am a fellow servant with you. Worship God.

That sets the right posture for us. It is a comfort that God sends his servants to guard and help his people, and Jesus’ words about the little ones’ angels have led many Christians to believe in guardian angels, though Scripture does not spell out how that works. It is not an invitation to pray to angels, seek messages from them, or build a faith around them. Colossians warns against exactly that. And loved ones who die in Christ do not become angels; Jesus says the resurrected will be like the angels, not that they turn into them. Our hope is not in angels but in the Lord they serve.

People also ask

Are angels real according to the Bible?
Yes. Scripture describes angels as created spirits who serve God (Hebrews 1:14; Psalm 103:20). They bring messages, protect, and worship, and they appear throughout the Old and New Testaments, including at Jesus’ birth and resurrection.
Do we have guardian angels?
Psalm 91:11-12 says God commands his angels to guard his people, and Jesus says the little ones have angels who see the Father’s face (Matthew 18:10). Many Christians believe in guardian angels from these passages; Scripture does not say whether each person has one assigned.
Do people become angels when they die?
No. Angels and humans are different creations. Jesus says the resurrected will be like the angels in that they no longer marry or die (Matthew 22:30; Luke 20:36), not that they turn into angels. Believers are raised as themselves, and Paul even says we will judge angels (1 Corinthians 6:3).
Should Christians pray to angels?
No. Scripture never teaches praying to angels, and angels refuse worship (Revelation 22:8-9). Colossians 2:18 warns against the worship of angels. Prayer is addressed to God through Jesus Christ.
