Matthew 22

1And Jesus responded to them again in parables, saying,

2The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared wedding celebrations for his son.

3And he sent his servants to call those who had been invited to the wedding, but they refused to come.

4Again he sent other servants, saying, "Tell those invited, 'See, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and fatlings are slaughtered, and everything is ready—come to the wedding!'"

5But they disregarded it and went away, one to his own farm, another to his business.

6But the rest seized his servants, mistreated them, and killed them.

7But the king was angry, and sent his armies, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.

8Then he said to his servants, "The wedding is ready, but those called were unworthy."

9Go therefore to the crossroads of the roads, and call whomever you find to the wedding.

10Those servants went out to the roads and gathered everyone they found, both wicked and good, and the wedding was filled with guests.

11But when the king entered to see the guests, he saw a man there not dressed in a wedding garment.

12And he said to him, “Friend, how did you enter here without wedding clothes?” But he was speechless.

13Then the king said to the servants, "Bind his feet and hands, and cast him into the outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

14For the called are many, but the chosen few.

15Then the Pharisees went and conferred on how they might ensnare him in his speech.

16And they sent their disciples to him with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are true and teach God's way in truth, and you care nothing for anyone, for you do not look to the faces of men."

17Tell us then, what do you think? Is it permitted to pay tribute to Caesar, or not?

18But Jesus, aware of their wickedness, said, "Why do you test me, hypocrites?"

19"Show me the coin for the tribute." They brought him a denarius.

20And he said to them, "Whose image and inscription is this?"

21They said to him, "Caesar's." Then he said to them, "Give therefore to Caesar the things of Caesar, and to God the things of God."

22And when they heard, they were amazed and, forsaking him, departed.

23On that day Sadducees who deny resurrection approached him and questioned him.

24saying, "Teacher, Moses said, 'If anyone dies childless, his brother will marry his wife and raise offspring for his brother.'"

25There were seven brothers among us, and the first married and died without offspring, leaving his wife to his brother.

26So too the second, and the third, up to the seven.

27And last of all, the woman died.

28In the resurrection, then, whose wife will she be among the seven? For they all had her.

29But Jesus answered them, "You go astray, not knowing the scriptures nor the power of God."

30For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven.

31But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you by God, saying,

32I am Abraham's God, Isaac's God, and Jacob's God. God is not God of the dead, but of the living.

33And when the crowds heard, they were astounded at his teaching.

34But the Pharisees, hearing that he had silenced the Sadducees, gathered together.

35And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him.

36Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?

37He said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with your whole heart, and with your whole soul, and with your whole mind.”

38This is the great and foremost commandment.

39And the second is like the other: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

40The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.

41Now as the Pharisees were assembled, Jesus questioned them.

42He said to them, "What do you think about Christ? Whose son is he?" They said to him, "David's."

43He said to them, "How then does David, in the Spirit, call him Lord when he says,

44The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at my right until I put your enemies under your feet."

45If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?

46And no one was able to answer him a word, nor did anyone dare from that day to question him any longer.
