Matthew 16

1And the Pharisees and Sadducees, coming to him and testing him, asked him to show them a sign from heaven.

2But he answered and said to them, "When evening comes, you say, 'Fair weather, for the sky is red.' "

3And in the morning, "Storm today, for the threatening sky is red." You know how to discern the appearance of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times.

4An evil and adulterous generation seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it except the sign of Jonah. He left them and departed.

5And when the disciples came to the other side, they forgot to take bread.

6Then Jesus said to them, "Watch and be on guard against the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees."

7But they were debating with one another, saying, "We took no bread."

8But Jesus, aware of it, said, "Why do you reason among yourselves, you of little faith, because you took no loaves?"

9Do you not yet understand, nor remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets you took up?

10Nor the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets did you take up?

11How do you not understand that I did not speak to you about bread? But beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

12Then they understood that he had not told them to beware of the leaven of the bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

13When Jesus arrived in the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?"

14They said, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

15He said to them, “But you, who do you say I am?”

16But Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of God who lives."

17Jesus answered him, "You are blessed, Simon Bar-Jonah, because flesh and blood did not reveal it to you, but my Father in heaven."

18And I say to you also that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.

19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you release on earth will be released in heaven.

20Then he commanded the disciples not to tell anyone that he is the Christ.

21From then Jesus began revealing to his disciples that he needed to go to Jerusalem and endure much suffering from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be put to death, and rise on the third day.

22And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! This will never happen to you.”

23But he turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me, because you do not regard the things of God but the things of men."

24Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone wants to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me."

25For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

26For what will it avail a person if he wins the entire world but loses his life? Or what will a person give as an exchange for his life?

27For the Son of Man is about to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will repay each one according to his deed.

28Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.
