What does the Bible say about gambling?
The Bible never mentions slot machines, poker, or sports betting, so no verse says “do not gamble.” It does speak plainly about what gambling runs on: the wish to get rich fast, the love of money, and trusting wealth more than God. Christians weigh that in different ways. Some avoid gambling entirely, and others treat a small bet among friends as entertainment. Scripture is clear about the warning signs, and it offers real help to anyone who feels trapped.
Bible verses about gambling
- Luke 12:15Guard yourselves against every kind of greed; life is more than possessions.
- 1 Timothy 6:9-10Those who want to be rich fall into a trap, and the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.
- Proverbs 13:11Wealth gained by empty means dwindles; wealth gathered little by little grows.
- Proverbs 28:20Whoever hurries to get rich will not go unpunished.
- Ecclesiastes 5:10Whoever loves money is never satisfied with money.
- Hebrews 13:5Be free from the love of money and satisfied with what you have, because God will not abandon you.
- Matthew 6:24You cannot serve both God and wealth.
- Proverbs 16:33The lot is cast into the lap, but every decision it gives is from Yahweh.
Then he said to them, “Watch out, and guard yourselves against every kind of greed, because a person’s life does not consist in the abundance of their possessions.”Gambling sells a feeling: this could be the one that changes everything. Scripture names that feeling greed, and Jesus warns us to guard against it because a life is not measured by what we own. Proverbs adds a plain observation, that money gathered little by little grows while money grabbed in a hurry dwindles. The odds in most gambling are built to match that proverb.
Honest Christians land in different places. Some say any gambling teaches us to treat other people’s loss as our gain, so they stay away. Others see a modest game with friends as no different from buying a ticket to a ballgame. The questions that help most are the same for everyone. Could I walk away from it today? Am I spending money that belongs to bills, family, or giving? Do I hide it? Am I chasing a loss? If any answer is yes, treat that as a warning, not a failure of character. People also ask
- Is gambling a sin?
- The Bible does not mention modern gambling, so Christians differ. Scripture does condemn greed, the love of money, and hurrying to get rich (Luke 12:15; 1 Timothy 6:9-10; Proverbs 28:20). Many Christians avoid gambling for those reasons. If it leads to loss, secrecy, or compulsion, it has become sin and harm.
- Is playing the lottery a sin?
- No verse mentions lotteries. The test is the same as for any gambling: are you chasing quick wealth, trusting luck over God’s provision, or spending money that belongs elsewhere? A small, occasional ticket you can afford is not the same as a habit that drains you.
- Does the Bible mention casting lots?
- Yes. Israel cast lots to make decisions, and Proverbs 16:33 says every decision the lot gives is from the Lord. That is about seeking God’s will, not about betting money for gain, so it does not settle the question of gambling.
- How do I stop gambling?
- Tell someone you trust, remove the apps and accounts, and give someone else control of your money for a while. Pray for contentment (Hebrews 13:5). In the U.S., call or text 1-800-GAMBLER for free, confidential help. Falling does not end your story: God forgives those who confess (1 John 1:9).
