What does the Bible say about drinking alcohol?

The Bible does not forbid drinking alcohol, but it plainly forbids drunkenness. Scripture calls wine a gift that gladdens the heart, and Jesus’ first sign was turning water into wine. The same Bible warns that wine mocks the people it leads astray and lists drunkenness among the works of the flesh. Christians differ on whether to drink at all. Many drink in moderation; others abstain for the sake of conscience, family history, or neighbors who struggle.

And do not get drunk with wine, which leads to reckless living, but be filled with the Spirit,
Ephesians 5:18 · Lumin Translation

Scripture holds two things together. Wine belongs to God’s good gifts: it is served at weddings and feasts, Paul tells Timothy to take a little for his stomach, and Jesus himself was accused of being a drunkard because he ate and drank with sinners. Yet Proverbs describes the bloodshot eyes and quarrels of those who linger over wine, and Paul names drunkenness alongside the sins that keep people from the kingdom. The line Scripture draws is not the first drink. It is being ruled by drink instead of by the Spirit.

That leaves room for honest difference. Some Christians drink a glass with dinner and give thanks. Others never drink, because addiction runs in their family, because they are in recovery, or because a friend is. Romans 14 asks both to stop judging each other and to care more about a neighbor’s stumbling than about their own freedom. If drinking has become something you hide, count, or cannot stop, that is not a debate about liberty. Tell someone you trust, and reach out for help today.

People also ask

Is drinking alcohol a sin?
Drinking alcohol is not a sin in itself. Scripture calls wine a gift that gladdens the heart (Psalm 104:15), and Jesus turned water into wine (John 2:1-11). Drunkenness is a sin: Ephesians 5:18 forbids it, and Galatians 5:21 lists it among the works of the flesh.
Did Jesus drink wine?
Yes. Jesus made wine at Cana (John 2), shared wine at the Last Supper, and was accused by critics of being a drunkard because he ate and drank with sinners (Matthew 11:19). The accusation was false, but it shows he did not abstain.
Why do some Christians not drink at all?
Some abstain because of addiction in their family or their own recovery, some out of love for neighbors who struggle (Romans 14:21), and some because their church asks it of members. Scripture permits that choice. It also asks drinkers and abstainers not to judge each other (Romans 14:3).
How much drinking is too much for a Christian?
The Bible draws the line at drunkenness and at anything that rules you (1 Corinthians 6:12). If you hide your drinking, need it to cope, or cannot stop when you mean to, treat that as a warning and talk to someone you trust.
