Bible answers
What does the Bible say about thanksgiving?
The Bible does not mention the American holiday, but it is full of thanksgiving. Israel gave thanks at harvest, at the temple, and after every meal in the land God gave them. Jesus gave thanks before he broke bread. Paul told the churches to give thanks in everything. In Scripture, thanks is not only a feeling at a full table. It is a way of remembering who gave the food, the year, and the people around you.
Bible verses about thanksgiving
- Psalm 100:4-5Come through his gates with thanksgiving, for the Lord is good and his faithfulness lasts from generation to generation.
- 1 Chronicles 16:34Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his steadfast love endures forever.
- Deuteronomy 8:10When you have eaten and are satisfied, bless the Lord for the good land he has given you.
- 1 Timothy 4:4-5Everything God created is good when it is received with thanksgiving.
- Colossians 3:17Whatever you do, in word or deed, do it in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to the Father.
- Psalm 95:2Come before him with thanksgiving and songs of praise.
- Ephesians 5:20Always give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of Jesus.
- 2 Corinthians 9:15Thanks be to God for his gift, which is beyond words.
Give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.Deuteronomy saw the danger of a full table. Once Israel had houses and harvests, they might forget the God who brought them out of slavery and say that their own hands had made them rich. So God gave them a habit: when you have eaten and are satisfied, bless the Lord. Thanks was the guard against forgetting.
That is still what thanksgiving does. It names the giver. It also makes room for the people at the table who are grieving, lonely, or short of money this year. Paul gave thanks from prison, and the psalmists gave thanks in the middle of laments. You do not have to pretend the year was good to thank God that he is. And a thankful table tends to become an open one: the Bible’s harvest feasts always made room for the stranger, the widow, and the poor.

- What is a good Bible verse for Thanksgiving?
- 1 Chronicles 16:34 and Psalm 107:1 say the same thing: give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his steadfast love endures forever. Psalm 100:4-5, Deuteronomy 8:10, and 2 Corinthians 9:15 are also often read at Thanksgiving.
- What is a short Thanksgiving prayer for the table?
- Here is one built on Deuteronomy 8:10 and Psalm 100: “Lord, you are good, and your love lasts forever. Thank you for this food, for the hands that made it, and for the people at this table. Remember those who are hungry or alone today, and make us generous. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
- Is Thanksgiving in the Bible?
- The American holiday is not, but giving thanks is everywhere in Scripture. Israel kept harvest feasts such as the Festival of Booths (Deuteronomy 16:13-15), the psalms call God’s people to come before him with thanksgiving, and Paul tells Christians to give thanks in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:18).
- How do you give thanks when this year was hard?
- Scripture does not ask you to pretend. Many psalms move from lament to thanks in the same prayer, and Paul wrote about thanks from prison. You can be honest about what hurts and still thank God for who he is and for one small gift today (Philippians 4:6).
