Proverbs 13

1A wise son heeds his father's discipline, but a mocker does not heed rebuke.

2From the fruit of a man's mouth he eats good things, but the soul of the treacherous eats violence.

3Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life, but whoever opens his lips wide brings ruin on himself.

4The sluggard's appetite craves but gains nothing, while the diligent's will be satisfied.

5A righteous person hates falsehood, but a wicked person is detestable and ashamed.

6Righteousness protects the upright's path, but wickedness overthrows the sinner.

7Some pass themselves off as rich, yet have nothing at all; some pass themselves off as poor, yet have great wealth.

8A man's riches ransom his life, but a poor man hears no rebuke.

9The light of the righteous rejoices, but the lamp of the wicked goes out.

10Only pride brings strife, but wisdom is with those who take counsel.

11Riches from vanity diminish, but he who gathers by hand increases.

12Hope deferred sickens the heart, but desire arriving is a tree of life.

13Whoever despises instruction will be ruined by it, but he who fears a commandment will be rewarded.

14The instruction of the wise is a wellspring of life, to avoid the traps of death.

15Good discretion grants favor, but the way of the treacherous is hard.

16Every prudent man works with knowledge, but a fool spreads folly.

17A wicked messenger falls into affliction, but a faithful envoy is healing.

18Poverty and disgrace befall whoever scorns discipline, but whoever heeds reproof is honored.

19Fulfilled desire delights the soul, but fools abhor turning from evil.

20Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.

21Adversity pursues sinners, but prosperity repays the righteous.

22A good man bequeaths a heritage to his children's children, but the sinner's wealth is treasured for the righteous.

23Abundant food is in the tillage of the poor, but there is that swept away without justice.

24Whoever withholds his rod hates his son, but whoever loves him disciplines him diligently.

25The righteous eats to satisfy his soul, but the belly of the wicked lacks.
