Psalm 140

1Rescue me, Yahweh, from the evil man; guard me from violent men.

2who plot calamities in their hearts, every day gathering for war.

3They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; venom of the adder beneath their lips. Selah.

4Guard me, Yahweh, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from violent men who have plotted to overthrow my steps.

5The proud have hidden a snare for me, spreading cords of a net beside the path; they have set traps for me. Selah.

6I said to Yahweh, "You are my God." Give ear, Yahweh, to the voice of my supplications.

7Yahweh my Lord, strength of my salvation, you covered my head in the day of battle.

8Do not grant, Yahweh, the desires of the wicked; do not promote his wicked device, lest they exalt themselves. Selah.

9Let the trouble of their lips cover the head of those who surround me.

10Let fiery coals be cast upon them; let him hurl them into the flames, into miry pits, lest they rise.

11Let no man of wicked tongue be settled in the earth; let evil pursue the violent man to overthrow him.

12I know that Yahweh will uphold the cause of the afflicted and justice for the needy.

13Surely the righteous will praise your name; the upright will dwell in your presence.
