Psalm 40

1I waited patiently for Yahweh; he bent toward me and heard my cry.

2He drew me up from a horrible pit, out of the miry clay; he set my feet on a rock and established my steps.

3He put a new song in my mouth, praise to our God; many will see it, fear, and trust in Yahweh.

4Blessed is the man who sets Yahweh as his trust and does not regard the proud nor those who stray into falsehood.

5Many are your wonders and thoughts toward us, Yahweh my God, which you have done. They cannot be set in order to you; if I declare and speak of them, they are more than can be recounted.

6Sacrifice and offering you did not delight in; you have opened my ears; burnt offering and sin offering you did not require.

7Then I said, "Behold, I have come—in the scroll of the book it is written of me."

8I take delight in doing your will, my God, and your law is in my heart.

9I have announced righteousness in the great assembly. Behold, I will not restrain my lips, Yahweh—you know.

10I have not hidden your righteousness in my heart; I have told your faithfulness and your salvation; I have not withheld your steadfast love and your truth from the great congregation.

11Yahweh, do not withhold your compassion from me; may your steadfast love and your faithfulness continually guard me.

12For countless evils have surrounded me; my iniquities have overtaken me, so that I could not see—they outnumber the hairs of my head, and my heart has forsaken me.

13Please, Yahweh, rescue me; Yahweh, hasten to my aid.

14May those seeking my life to destroy it be ashamed and confounded together; may those delighting in my harm turn back and be put to shame.

15Let them be appalled because of the reward of their shame, those who say to me, "Aha! Aha!"

16Let all who seek you rejoice greatly and be glad in you; let those who love your salvation say continually, "Let Yahweh be exalted!"

17But I am afflicted and needy; may my Lord consider me. You are my help and my deliverer; do not delay, my God.
