Leviticus 25

1Yahweh spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai, saying,

2Speak to the sons of Israel and tell them: When you come into the land that I am giving you, then the land shall keep a sabbath to Yahweh.

3Six years you shall sow your field, and six years you shall prune your vineyard, and gather its produce.

4But in the seventh year a sabbath rest shall come to the land, a sabbath to Yahweh. You shall not sow your field or prune your vineyard.

5You shall not reap the aftergrowth of your harvest or gather grapes from your unpruned vine; it shall be a sabbath-rest year for the land.

6The sabbath of the land shall be food for you—for yourself, your servant, your maidservant, your hired servant, your sojourner, and the foreigners dwelling with you.

7All its produce shall be food for your livestock and the beasts that are in your land.

8You shall count for yourself seven sabbaths of years, seven years seven times, and they shall be for you the days of seven sabbaths of years, forty-nine years.

9You shall sound a trumpet blast on the tenth day of the seventh month, on the Day of Atonement; you shall sound the trumpet throughout all your land.

10Consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants; it shall be a jubilee to you, and each man shall return to his possession, each man to his family.

11That fiftieth year shall be a jubilee for you; you shall not sow, nor reap its aftergrowth, nor gather from its undressed vines.

12For it is a jubilee; it shall be holy to you. You shall eat its produce from the field.

13In this year of Jubilee you shall return, each man to his possession.

14When you sell property to your neighbor, or buy from your neighbor's hand, do not defraud one another.

15You shall buy from your neighbor based on the number of years after the Jubilee; he shall sell to you based on the number of years of the produce.

16According to the abundance of the years you shall increase its price, and according to the fewness of the years you shall diminish its price; for he sells the number of the harvests to you.

17You shall not oppress one another, but you shall fear your God, for I am Yahweh your God.

18You shall do my statutes and keep my judgments, and do them, and dwell securely in the land.

19The land will yield its fruit, and you will eat to full satisfaction and dwell securely on it.

20And if you say, "What will we eat in the seventh year? Look, we will not sow, nor gather our produce."

21I will command my blessing for you in the sixth year, and it will yield produce for three years.

22You shall sow the eighth year and eat from the old harvest until the ninth year, until its harvest arrives; you shall eat the old harvest.

23The land must not be sold permanently, for the land belongs to me, since you are strangers and residents with me.

24In all the land you possess, you shall provide redemption for the land.

25If your brother becomes poor and sells some of his possession, his near kinsman shall come to him and redeem what his brother sold.

26If a man has no redeemer and acquires sufficient means to redeem it,

27Let him calculate the years from its sale and return the surplus to the man to whom he sold it; then he returns to his possession.

28But if his hand does not find enough to return it to him, then what he sold shall remain in the hand of the buyer until the year of Jubilee, and it shall go out in the Jubilee, and he shall return to his possession.

29If a man sells a dwelling house in a walled city, it shall be his redemption until the days from its sale complete a full year; it shall be his redemption.

30If it is not redeemed until a full year runs out for it, then the house in the city that has no wall belongs permanently to its buyer throughout his generations; it shall not go out in the Jubilee.

31But houses in the villages without a surrounding wall are reckoned like fields of the land; redemption belongs to them, and they go free in the Jubilee.

32The cities of the Levites and the houses of the cities they possess shall have redemption forever for the Levites.

33Whatever is redeemed from the Levites—the sold house and the city of his possession—shall be released in the Jubilee, for the houses of the Levites' cities are their possession among the children of Israel.

34The fields of the pasturelands of their cities shall not be sold, for it is their possession forever.

35If your brother becomes poor and his hand falters beside you, you shall strengthen him; as a sojourner and settler he shall live with you.

36Do not take usury or increase from him, but fear your God, that your brother may live with you.

37You shall not give him your money at interest, nor give him your food for profit.

38I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out from the land of Egypt to give you the land of Canaan, to be your God.

39If your brother becomes poor among you and is sold to you, you shall not make him perform the service of a slave.

40He shall be with you as a hireling and as a sojourner until the year of Jubilee; he shall serve with you.

41He shall go out from among you—he and his children with him—and return to his family and his fathers' possession.

42For they are my servants, whom I brought out from the land of Egypt; they shall not be sold as slaves.

43You shall not rule over him ruthlessly, but fear your God.

44Your male slaves and female slaves that you have shall come from the nations surrounding you; from them you shall buy male slaves and female slaves.

45You may also buy from the children of the foreigners who sojourn among you, and from their families who are with you, those they have fathered in your land; they shall be your possession.

46You may bequeath them to your children after you as an inheritance to possess as property forever; you may keep them as bondservants eternally, but among your brothers the children of Israel no one shall rule his fellow harshly.

47If a sojourner or resident alien among you prospers, and your brother living near him becomes poor and sells himself to a sojourner or resident alien among you, or to a member of the sojourner's family,

48After he is sold, redemption will be his; one of his brothers will redeem him.

49either his uncle or his uncle's son may redeem him, or one of his close kin from his family may redeem him, or if he has sufficient means, he may redeem himself.

50He shall compute with his buyer from the year he was sold to him until the Jubilee year, and the price of his sale shall be according to the number of years—like the days of a hired servant—it shall be with him.

51If there are still many years, according to them he shall return his redemption from the money of his purchase.

52If only a few years remain until the year of Jubilee, he shall reckon with him; according to his years he shall return his redemption.

53Like a yearly hireling he shall remain with him; he shall not rule over him harshly in your sight.

54If he is not redeemed by these, then he shall go free in the Jubilee year—he and his children with him.

55For the children of Israel are servants to me; they are my servants, whom I brought out from the land of Egypt. I am Yahweh your God.
