Leviticus 10

1Nadab and Abihu, Aaron's sons, each took his censer, put fire in them, placed incense upon it, and presented foreign fire before Yahweh, which he had not commanded them.

2Fire came out from before Yahweh, consumed them, and they died before Yahweh.

3Moses said to Aaron, "This is what Yahweh declared when he said, 'I will show myself holy among those near me, and before all the people I will be glorified.'" Aaron was silent.

4Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, sons of Aaron's uncle Uzziel, and said to them, "Come near, carry your brothers from before the sanctuary to outside the camp."

5They came near and carried them out of the camp in their tunics, as Moses had said.

6Moses said to Aaron and his sons Eleazar and Ithamar, "Do not let the hair of your heads hang loose, nor tear your garments, lest you die and anger arise against the whole congregation; but let your brothers, all the house of Israel, weep for the burning which Yahweh kindled.

7Do not go out from the entrance of the tent of meeting, lest you die, for the anointing oil of Yahweh is upon you. They acted according to the word of Moses.

8Yahweh spoke to Aaron, saying,

9Do not drink wine or strong drink—you or your sons with you—when you enter the tent of meeting, lest you die; it is an eternal statute for your generations.

10and to distinguish between the holy and the profane, and between the unclean and the clean.

11and to teach the children of Israel all the statutes that Yahweh spoke to them through Moses.

12Moses spoke to Aaron and to Eleazar and Ithamar, his surviving sons: "Take the remaining grain offering from Yahweh's fire offerings and eat it unleavened beside the altar, for it is most holy."

13You shall eat it in a holy place, because it is your portion and your sons' portion from Yahweh's fire offerings; for so I have been commanded.

14You shall eat the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the heave offering in a clean place—you, your sons, and your daughters with you—for they have been given as your portion and the portion of your sons from the peace offerings of the sons of Israel.

15They shall bring the thigh of the contribution and the breast of the wave offering with the fats of the fire offerings to wave it as a wave offering before Yahweh; and it shall be for you and your sons with you as a perpetual statute, as Yahweh commanded.

16Moses carefully sought the sin offering goat, and saw it burned up; he grew angry against Eleazar and against Ithamar, Aaron's remaining sons, saying,

17Why haven't you eaten the sin offering in the holy place, for it is most holy, and he gave it to you to bear the iniquity of the congregation, to make atonement for them before Yahweh?

18Behold, its blood was not brought inside the holy place. You should have eaten it in the holy place, as I commanded.

19Aaron spoke to Moses, "Look, today they presented their sin offering and burnt offering before Yahweh, and things like these have happened to me. If I had eaten the sin offering today, would it have pleased Yahweh?"

20Moses heard, and it pleased him.
