Leviticus 11

Yahweh spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying to them,

Speak to the Israelites, saying, These are the living creatures you shall eat from among all the beasts that are on the earth.

Among the livestock, all that divide the hoof and cleave the cloven hooves and bring up the cud, you shall eat.

However, you shall not eat any of these from those that chew the cud or those that split the hoof: the camel, because it chews the cud but does not split the hoof; it is unclean to you.

And the coney, because it brings up the cud but does not divide the hoof, is unclean to you.

The hare, because she brings up the cud but does not divide the hoof, she is unclean to you.

The pig, because it splits the hoof and is cloven-footed, but does not chew the cud, is unclean to you.

Do not eat their flesh, and do not touch their carcasses; they are unclean to you.

You may eat these from all that are in the waters: everything that has fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers—you may eat them.

All that lack fins and scales in the seas and the rivers—every swarming thing in the waters and every living soul that is in the waters—are an abomination to you.

They shall be abominable to you; you shall not eat their flesh, and you shall abhor their carcasses.

Everything in the waters that has no fins and scales is an abomination to you.

These you shall abhor among the birds; they shall not be eaten—they are abominable: the eagle, the ossifrage, and the osprey.

and the vulture, and the kite of its kind,

all ravens of their kind,

and the ostrich, the nighthawk, the cuckoo, and the hawk of its kind,

the little owl, the cormorant, and the great owl

and the swan, the cormorant, and the vulture

the stork, the heron of its kind, the lapwing, and the bat.

All swarming flying creatures that walk on all fours are an abomination to you.

But you may eat these from all the flying swarming things that go on all fours, which have legs above their feet for leaping with them on the earth.

From these you may eat the locust of its kind, the bald locust of its kind, the cricket of its kind, and the grasshopper of its kind.

All swarming flying creatures that have four feet are detestable to you.

By these you will be defiled: whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean until evening.

Whoever carries any of their carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until evening.

Every beast with divided, cloven hooves that neither is cloven-footed nor chews the cud is unclean to you. All who touch them will be unclean.

Whatever walks on its paws among all the animals that go on all fours is unclean to you. Whoever touches their carcass will be unclean until evening.

Whoever carries their carcass must wash his clothes and be unclean until evening; they are unclean to you.

These are unclean for you among the swarming things that creep on the earth: the weasel, the mouse, and the tortoise of its kind.

and the ferret, the chameleon, the lizard, the snail, and the mole.

These are unclean for you among all the creeping things; everyone who touches them when they are dead becomes unclean until evening.

Anything one of them falls on when they die becomes unclean, whether any wooden vessel, garment, skin, or sack, or any vessel in which work is done; it must be put into water, and it remains unclean until evening, then it becomes clean.

Every earthen vessel into which any of them falls, whatever is inside it becomes unclean, and you shall break it.

Any food that is eaten becomes unclean if water comes on it, and any drink that is drunk in any vessel becomes unclean.

Everything on which any part of their carcass falls shall be unclean; oven or ranges for pots shall be broken down—they are unclean, and shall be unclean to you.

Nevertheless, a spring or cistern of gathered water will be clean, but whatever touches their carcass will be unclean.

And if any of their carcass falls on any seed for sowing, it is clean.

But if water is put on seed and part of their carcass falls on it, it is unclean to you.

And if any beast you may eat dies, whoever touches its carcass will be unclean until evening.

Whoever eats any of its carcass must wash his garments and be unclean until evening; whoever carries its carcass must wash his garments and be unclean until evening.

Every swarming thing that swarms on the earth is detestable. It shall not be eaten.

Whatever moves upon its belly, whatever moves on all fours, or whatever has many feet among all the swarming things that swarm on the earth—you shall not eat them, for they are detestable.

Do not make yourselves detestable with any swarming thing that swarms, nor defile yourselves with them, lest you become unclean by them.

For I am Yahweh your God: sanctify yourselves and be holy, for I am holy, nor shall you defile yourselves with any creeping thing that moves on the earth.

For I am Yahweh who brought you up from the land of Egypt to be your God; you shall be holy, for I am holy.

This is the law for the beast, the bird, every living creature that moves in the waters, and every creature that creeps on the earth.

to distinguish between the unclean and the clean, and between the living creature that is eaten and the living creature that is not eaten.
