Job 41

Job 40Job 42

Can you draw Leviathan with a hook, or let down his tongue with a cord?

Can you put a hook in his nose, or pierce his jaw with a thorn?

Will he lavish entreaties on you, or speak tenderly to you?

Will he make a covenant with you to take him for a servant forever?

Will you mock him like a bird, or bind him for your maidens?

Will companions bargain for him? Will they divide him among merchants?

Will you fill his hide with barbed irons, or his head with fish spears?

Put your hand upon him; remember the battle—do no more.

See, his hope fails. Won't one be cast down even at his appearance?

None so fierce that he would rouse him—who then is he who stands before me?

Who has anticipated me, that I should repay him? Everything under the heavens is mine.

I will not be silent about his limbs, nor his mighty power, nor his graceful proportions.

Who can uncover the surface of his garment? Who can come with his double bridle?

Who can open the doors of his face? Dread surrounds his teeth.

Mighty shields are his pride, shut with a tight seal.

One to one they draw near, and no air comes between them.

They adhere one to another; they grasp each other and cannot be separated.

His sneezings shine light, and his eyes are like the eyelids of dawn.

Torches go from his mouth; they leap like sparks of fire.

Smoke goes out from his nostrils like from a boiling pot and caldron.

His breath sets coals ablaze, and flame bursts from his mouth.

Strength remains in his neck, and dread dances before him.

The flakes of his flesh stick fast together; they hold tight upon him—they cannot shift.

His heart is as firm as a stone, and as firm as the lower millstone.

His majesty terrifies the mighty; before his thrashings they purify themselves.

The sword that reaches him does not prevail; nor spear, dart, nor breastplate.

He considers iron straw and bronze rotten wood.

No arrow drives him away; sling stones turn to stubble for him.

Darts are counted as stubble, and he laughs at the rattling of a spear.

Sharp shards lie beneath him; he spreads sharp points across the mire.

He boils the deep like a pot; he makes the sea like a pot of ointment.

He brightens a path behind him; one considers the deep to be gray-haired.

On earth there is nothing like him, made without fear.

He sees all lofty things; he is king over all the sons of pride.
