Job 4

1Eliphaz the Temanite replied, saying,

2If anyone attempts a word with you, will you weary? But who can restrain words?

3See, you have disciplined many, and strengthened weak hands.

4Your words have raised up those who stumble, and you have strengthened buckling knees.

5But now it comes to you, and you faint; it reaches you, and you are dismayed.

6Isn't your fear your confidence, and the integrity of your ways your hope?

7Remember now—who, being innocent, has perished? Where were the upright cut off?

8As I have seen, those who plow iniquity and sow trouble reap it.

9God's breath destroys them, and the blast of his anger consumes them.

10The lion's roar, the fierce lion's cry, and the young lions' teeth are broken.

11The lion perishes from lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness scatter.

12A matter was brought to me by stealth, and my ear received a little of it.

13In thoughts from visions of night, when deep sleep falls upon men.

14Dread befell me, and trembling terrified all my bones.

15A spirit passed over my face; the hair of my flesh bristled.

16It stood, but I did not recognize its appearance—a likeness before my eyes—in silence, and I heard a voice.

17Can a mortal be more righteous than God? Can a man be purer than his maker?

18Behold, he does not trust his servants, and he charges his angels with folly.

19How much less those who dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, whom a moth crushes!

20From morning to evening they are crushed, perishing forever without anyone taking note.

21Isn't their cord pulled up within them? They die without wisdom.
