Job 38

1Yahweh answered Job from the midst of the whirlwind and said.

2Who is this that darkens counsel through words without knowledge?

3Gird your loins now like a man; I will question you, and you answer me.

4Where were you when I founded the earth? Tell, if you understand.

5Who established its measurements, if you know? Or who stretched the line over it?

6On what were its foundations sunk? Or who laid its cornerstone?

7When the morning stars rejoiced together, and all the sons of God shouted?

8Who enclosed the sea with doors when it came bursting from the womb?

9when I appointed a cloud as its clothing, and thick darkness as its swaddling band,

10I broke up for it my appointed boundary and set a bar and doors.

11and I said, "Come right up to here but no further, and here your arrogant waves shall be halted."

12Have you commanded the morning in your days and made the dawn know its place?

13to grasp the corners of the earth and shake the wicked from it?

14It changes like clay under the seal, and they stand like a garment.

15Their light is restrained, and the lofty arm is broken.

16Have you gone to the springs of the sea, or have you walked in searching the deep?

17Have the gates of death been uncovered to you, or have you seen the gates of death's shadow?

18Have you attended to the breadth of the earth? Make it known if you know all of it.

19Where then is the way light abides? And darkness, where then is its place?

20that you take it to its border, and that you understand the paths to its house?

21You know because you were born then, and the number of your days is great.

22Have you entered the storehouses of snow, or seen the storehouses of hail?

23which I have held back for the time of distress, for the day of battle and war?

24By what path is light divided, which scatters the east wind upon the earth?

25Who has cut a channel for the flood and a path for the thunderbolt?

26to rain upon earth that has no man, upon the wilderness that has no man within it.

27to satisfy the desolate waste and to sprout the bud of grass?

28Does the rain have a father, or who begets the drops of dew?

29From whose womb does the ice emerge? Who births heaven's hoarfrost?

30Waters hide like stone, and the faces of the deep freeze.

31Can you bind the Pleiades' cluster, or untie Orion's cords?

32Can you lead forth Mazzoroth at its appointed time, or guide the Bear with her young?

33Do you know the statutes of the heavens? Can you set its dominion over the earth?

34Can you raise your voice to the clouds, that an abundance of waters may cover you?

35Can you send lightnings, that they may go and say to you, "Here we are?"

36Who has set wisdom in the inward parts? Or who has granted understanding to the heart?

37Who counts the clouds with wisdom? Who pours out the bottles of heaven?

38when the dust hardens into a mass and the clods stick together?

39Will you hunt prey for the lioness and fill the young lions' appetite?

40when they crouch in their dens and remain in the thicket to lie in wait?

41Who furnishes the raven its food when its young cry to God and wander for lack of meat?
