Job 2

1There was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before Yahweh, and Satan also came among them to present himself before Yahweh.

2Yahweh said to Satan, "From where have you come?" Satan answered Yahweh and said, "From roaming the earth, and from walking back and forth in it."

3Yahweh said to Satan, "Have you turned your attention to my servant Job? For no one on earth is like him—a blameless and upright man who reveres God and shuns evil, yet he still holds fast his integrity, though you urged me against him to ruin him groundlessly."

4Satan answered Yahweh and said, "Skin for skin, and all that a man has he will give for his life."

5But stretch out your hand now and strike his bone and his flesh, and he will curse you to your face.

6Yahweh said to Satan, "See, he is in your hand—only guard his life."

7Satan went out from Yahweh's presence and struck Job with a painful boil from the sole of his foot to his head.

8He took a potsherd to scrape himself with it, and sat among the ashes.

9His wife said to him, “Do you still hold fast to your integrity? Bless God and die.”

10He said to her, "You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. Do we receive good from God, and not receive evil?" In all this Job did not sin with his lips.

11Job's three friends heard of all this calamity that had come upon him, and each arrived from his place—Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite—for they had assembled together to come lament with him and comfort him.

12When they lifted their eyes from a distance and failed to recognize him, they raised their voices and wept; each tore his robe and cast dust on their heads toward heaven.

13They sat with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his pain was exceedingly great.
