Isaiah 47

1Descend and sit in the dust, virgin daughter of Babylon; sit on the ground without a throne, daughter of the Chaldeans, for they will call you tender and delicate no longer.

2Take millstones and grind flour; uncover your veil, bare your train, reveal your thigh, cross the rivers.

3Your nakedness will be exposed—yes, your shame will become visible. I will take vengeance, and I will spare no man.

4Our Redeemer, Yahweh of hosts is his name, the Holy One of Israel.

5Dwell silently and enter darkness, daughter of the Chaldeans, for they will call you mistress of kingdoms no more.

6I was angry with my people, profaned my inheritance, and gave them into your hand; you showed them no mercy, laying your yoke very heavily on the aged.

7You said, "I will be a mistress forever," so that you did not take these things to heart, nor remember its end.

8Now listen, you voluptuous one who dwells securely, who says in your heart, “I am, and none besides me; I will not sit as a widow anymore, nor know bereavement.”

9These two will come to you in an instant on one day: childlessness and widowhood. They will come upon you completely despite the abundance of your sorceries and the immense strength of your enchanters.

10You relied on your evil; you said, "No one sees me." Your wisdom and your knowledge deceived you, and you said in your heart, "I am, and there is none besides me."

11Evil will come upon you; you will not know its dawn, calamity will fall upon you that you cannot appease, and desolation will come upon you suddenly that you will not know.

12Stand now with your enchantments and the abundance of your sorceries, in which you have labored from your youth; perhaps you will be able to profit, perhaps you will prevail.

13You are wearied in the abundance of your counsels; now let the diviners, the dividers of the heavens, the gazers at the stars, and the new moon announcers stand up and rescue you from what will come upon you.

14Behold, they have become like stubble; fire consumes them. They will not rescue their lives from the flame's grasp—no coal to warm by, no blaze to sit before.

15So they will turn out for you—those you have labored over, your merchants from your youth; each will wander to his own region, with none to save you.
