Isaiah 64

1If only you would tear the heavens and come down, that the mountains might flow down before your presence.

2as the melting fire kindles, fire boils the waters—to make your name known to your adversaries, so nations tremble at your presence.

3When you did fearful things we did not expect, you came down, the mountains flowed down at your presence.

4From ancient times no one has heard or listened; no eye has seen a God besides you who works for the one waiting for him.

5You meet those who rejoice and do what is right, who remember you in your ways. Behold, you were angry, and we sinned in them forever; shall we be saved?

6We have all become like the unclean, and all our righteous deeds like filthy garments; we all wither like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, carry us away.

7No one calls on your name or rouses himself to grasp you, for you have hidden your face from us and melted us in the hand of our iniquities.

8And now, Yahweh, you are our father; we are the clay, and you our potter; we all are the work of your hand.

9Do not be very angry, Yahweh, nor remember iniquity forever; behold, look now—we are all your people.

10Your consecrated cities have become a wilderness, Zion a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation.

11Our holy and glorious house, where our fathers praised you, has been consumed by fire; all our precious things have become desolate.

12Will you hold back because of these things, Yahweh? Will you stay silent and afflict us so severely?
