Ezekiel 40

1In the twenty-fifth year of our exile, at the beginning of the year, on the tenth day of the month, in the fourteenth year after the city was struck, on that very day the hand of Yahweh was upon me, and he brought me there.

2In visions from God he brought me to the land of Israel and set me upon a very high mountain, on which stood what looked like a city's structure to the south.

3He brought me there, and look, a man stood in the gate whose appearance was like bronze, with a flax cord in his hand and a measuring rod.

4The man said to me, “Son of man, see with your eyes, hear with your ears, and set your heart on all that I will show you, for you were brought here so I might reveal them to you; declare to the house of Israel everything you see.”

5Behold, a wall stood outside the house, enclosing it completely, and in the man's hand a measuring reed of six cubits by the cubit and a handbreadth, and he measured the building's thickness at one reed and its height at one reed.

6He came to the gate facing east, went up its steps, and measured the threshold of the gate one reed wide, and one threshold one reed wide.

7Each chamber was one reed long and one reed wide, with five cubits between the chambers; the threshold of the gate next to the gate's porch toward the house was one reed.

8He measured the porch of the gate toward the house, one reed.

9He measured the gate porch at eight cubits and its jambs at two cubits; the gate porch was toward the house.

10The east gate's chambers were three on one side and three on the other; those three had the same measure, and the posts had the same measure on one side and on the other.

11He measured the width of the gate's entrance at ten cubits, and the gate's length at thirteen cubits.

12And the border before the chambers was one cubit on this side, and the border one cubit on that side; the chambers were six cubits on this side and six cubits on that side.

13He measured the gate from the roof of the chamber to its roof, twenty-five cubits wide; entrance opposite entrance.

14He made the posts sixty cubits, reaching to the post of the court all around the gate.

15From the front of the entrance gate to the front of the inner gate's porch was fifty cubits.

16The chambers and their posts inside the gate all around had narrow windows, as did the arches; windows ran all around inside, and each post bore palm trees.

17He brought me into the outer court, and there were chambers and a pavement made for the court all around; thirty chambers were upon the pavement.

18And the pavement ran to the side of the gates, opposite the length of the gates—the lower pavement.

19He measured the width from in front of the lower gate to in front of the inner court on the outside, one hundred cubits on the east and the north.

20The gate facing north to the outer court—he measured its length and its breadth.

21Its chambers were three on one side and three on the other; its posts and arches were according to the measure of the first gate, its length fifty cubits and its width twenty-five cubits.

22Its windows, arches, and palm trees were the same measure as the gate facing east, and they ascended to it by seven steps, with its arches before them.

23A gate to the inner court was opposite the north gate and the east gate; he measured one hundred cubits from one gate to the other.

24He led me toward the south, and look, a gate toward the south; he measured its posts and arches according to these measures.

25There were windows in it, in its arch, and in its arches all around, like those windows: fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide.

26There were seven steps up to it, its arches in front of them, and palm trees on its posts, one on each side.

27A gate to the inner court faced south, and he measured from gate to gate on the south one hundred cubits.

28He brought me through the south gate to the inner court, and he measured the south gate according to these measures.

29Its chambers, posts, and arches matched these measurements, with windows to it and to its arches all around; it was fifty cubits in length and twenty-five cubits in width.

30The arches all around were twenty-five cubits long and five cubits wide.

31Its arches faced the outer court, palm trees stood on its posts, and eight steps led up to it.

32He brought me into the inner court on the east side and measured the gate according to these measures.

33Its chambers, its posts, and its arches had measures like these, with windows in it and in its arches all around; it was fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide.

34Its arches faced the outer court, palm trees stood on its posts on one side and the other, and its ascent had eight steps.

35He brought me to the north gate and measured it by these measures.

36Its chambers, its posts, its arches, and its windows all around it, with a length of fifty cubits and a breadth of twenty-five cubits.

37Its posts faced the outer court, palm trees stood beside its posts on this side and on that side, and eight steps led to its ascent.

38A chamber and its entrance were by the posts of the gates; there they washed the burnt offering.

39In the gate's porch stood two tables on this side and two tables on that side, for slaughtering on them the burnt offering, the sin offering, and the guilt offering.

40At the outer side, as one ascends to the entrance of the north gate, stood two tables; and at the other side, which was by the gate's porch, stood two tables.

41By the shoulder of the gate were four tables on one side and four on the other; eight tables on which they slaughtered.

42Four tables of hewn stone for the burnt offering—one and a half cubits long, one and a half cubits wide, and one cubit high—on which they laid the utensils used to slaughter the burnt offering and the sacrifice upon them.

43The hooks, one handbreadth long, were fixed all around inside the house, and on the tables lay the flesh of the offering.

44Outside the inner gate were chambers for the singers in the inner court beside the north gate, their faces toward the south—one beside the east gate, faces toward the north.

45He said to me, "This chamber facing south is for the priests who keep the charge of the house."

46The chamber facing north is for the priests who keep charge of the altar; these are the sons of Zadok, the ones drawing near to Yahweh from the sons of Levi to serve him.

47He measured the court, a hundred cubits long and a hundred cubits wide, square, and the altar before the house.

48He brought me to the house's porch and measured the porch jamb, five cubits from one side and five cubits from the other; the gate's width was three cubits from one side and three cubits from the other.

49The porch was twenty cubits long and eleven cubits wide, even to the steps by which they ascended to it, with pillars beside the jambs—one on one side and one on the other.
