Ezekiel 16

The word of Yahweh came to me, saying,

Son of man, make Jerusalem know her abominations.

And say, Thus says the Lord Yahweh to Jerusalem: Your origin and your birth were from the land of the Canaanite; the Amorite was your father, and your mother was a Hittite.

Your birth, on the day you were born, your navel was not cut, nor were you washed in water to cleanse you; you were not salted at all, nor swaddled at all.

No eye spared you to do any of these for you, to show you compassion; instead you were hurled onto the field's surface in revulsion at your very life, on the day you were born.

I passed over you and saw you polluted in your blood; I said to you in your blood, "Live!" Indeed, I said to you in your blood, "Live!"

I made you multiply like the growth of the field, and you multiplied and grew great and attained full adornment; your breasts took shape and your hair grew, yet you were naked and bare.

Later I passed by you and saw you—behold, it was your time, the time of love. I spread the corner of my garment over you and covered your nakedness; I swore to you and entered into covenant with you, declares Lord Yahweh, and you became mine.

I washed you with water, rinsed your blood off you, and anointed you with oil.

I clothed you with embroidered work and shod you with badger skin, wrapped you in fine linen, and covered you with silk.

I adorned you with ornaments, put bracelets on your hands, and a chain on your neck.

I put a ring on your nose, earrings on your ears, and a beautiful crown on your head.

You were adorned with gold and silver, and your garments were fine linen, silk, and embroidery; you ate fine flour, honey, and oil, grew exceedingly beautiful, and prospered to royalty.

Your fame spread among the nations because of your beauty, for it was perfect through my splendor, which I put upon you, says Lord Yahweh.

You trusted in your beauty and prostituted yourself because of your fame, pouring out your prostitutions on every passerby; it became his.

You took some of your garments and made colorful high places for yourself, and prostituted yourself on them; no such things come, nor will it be.

You took your beautiful ornaments of my gold and of my silver, which I had given you, and made for yourself images of men, and prostituted yourself with them.

You took your embroidered garments and clothed them, and put my oil and my incense before them.

My bread that I gave you—fine flour, oil, and honey with which I fed you—you set before them as a pleasing aroma, and so it was, declares the Lord Yahweh.

You took your sons and your daughters, whom you bore to me, and sacrificed them to them to be devoured. Was it too little, your prostitution, your prostitutions?

You slaughtered my sons and handed them over by making them pass through to them.

In all your abominations and your prostitutions you did not remember the days of your youth, when you were naked and bare, wallowing in your blood.

It happened after all your wickedness: "Woe, woe to you!" says the Lord Yahweh.

You built yourself a prominent place and made yourself a high place in every street.

You built your high place at every street corner, made your beauty detestable, spread your legs for every passerby, and multiplied your prostitution.

You prostituted yourself with the Egyptians, your neighbors great in flesh, and multiplied your prostitution to anger me.

See, I extended my hand over you and curtailed your allotment, and abandoned you to the desire of those who hate you, the daughters of the Philistines who are ashamed because of your lewd way.

You prostituted yourself with the Assyrians too, because you were not satisfied; you prostituted yourself with them, but still were not satisfied.

Moreover you multiplied your prostitution to the land of Canaan, to Chaldea, yet even with this you were not satisfied.

How your heart languishes, says the Lord Yahweh, in doing all these deeds of a brazen prostitute!

You built your raised platform at the head of every road and made your high place in every plaza, yet you were not like a prostitute who scorns payment.

An adulterous wife who takes strangers instead of her husband!

They give gifts to all prostitutes, but you give your gifts to all your lovers and bribe them to come to you from every side for your whoredoms.

You proved contrary to other women in your prostitution—no one went after you to prostitute, and you gave payment while no payment was given to you; thus you proved contrary.

Therefore, prostitute, hear the word of Yahweh!

Thus says the Lord Yahweh: Because your brazenness gushed out and your nakedness stood revealed through your harlotries with your lovers, and on account of all your abominable idols and the blood of your sons whom you gave to them;

Therefore, look, I will gather all your lovers with whom you took delight, together with everyone you loved and everyone you hated; I will gather them against you from every side and reveal your nakedness to them, and they will see all your nakedness.

I will judge you as adulteresses and shedders of blood are judged, and I will bring blood upon you in fury and jealousy.

I will deliver you into their hands, and they will demolish your pavilion and tear down your high places; they will strip off your garments and seize your splendid ornaments, leaving you naked and bare.

They will bring an assembly against you and stone you with stones, thrusting you through with their swords.

They will set your houses ablaze and carry out judgments against you before many women; I will bring your prostitution to an end, and you too will give no more payments.

I will calm my wrath against you, my jealousy will depart from you, I will be quiet, and I will be angry no more.

Because you did not remember the days of your youth but provoked me in all these things, look, I will also bring your conduct upon your head, declares the Lord Yahweh; you must not commit this lewd act above all your abominations.

See, everyone who uses proverbs will use a proverb against you, saying, Like mother, like daughter.

You are your mother's daughter who despises her husband and her children, and the sister of your sisters who despised their husbands and their children; your mother was a Hittite, and your father an Amorite.

Your elder sister is Samaria, she and her daughters who dwell to your left, and your sister younger than you, who dwells to your right, is Sodom and her daughters.

You have not walked in their ways or committed their abominations—as if that were very little—you have been more corrupt than they in all your ways.

As I live, declares the Lord Yahweh, Sodom your sister has not done it—she nor her daughters—as you have done, you and your daughters.

Behold, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: pride, fullness of bread, and prosperous idleness were hers and her daughters', and she did not strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.

They became haughty and performed an abomination in my presence, so I removed them as I saw fit.

Samaria did not sin half your sins, but you multiplied your abominations more than theirs and vindicated your sisters through all your abominations which you did.

You also bear your shame for judging your sisters through sins that made you more abominable than they, so they prove more righteous than you; yes, be ashamed too and bear your shame for vindicating your sisters.

I will restore their captivity, the captivity of Sodom and her daughters, the captivity of Samaria and her daughters, and the captivity of your captives in their midst.

so that you bear your shame and feel ashamed because of all that you have done, since you comfort them.

Your sisters, Sodom and her daughters, will return to their former state, and Samaria and her daughters will return to theirs, and you and your daughters will return to yours.

Your sister Sodom was not a report from your mouth in the day of your pride.

Before your wickedness was exposed, as at the time of disgrace from the daughters of Syria and all her neighbors, the daughters of the Philistines who despise you on all sides.

You have borne your debauchery and your detestable deeds, declares Yahweh.

For thus says the Lord Yahweh: I will do to you as you did, you who despised the oath by breaking the covenant.

I will remember my covenant with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish an everlasting covenant for you.

You will remember your ways and be ashamed when you receive your sisters, both the older ones greater than you and the younger ones smaller than you, and I will give them to you as daughters, but not on account of your covenant.

And I will establish my covenant with you, and you will know that I am Yahweh.

so that you remember and feel shame, never opening your mouth again because of your disgrace when I atone for you for all that you have done, declares the Lord Yahweh.
