1 Chronicles 5

1Reuben's sons, Israel's firstborn—for he was the firstborn, but because he defiled his father's bed, his birthright passed to Joseph's sons, son of Israel—and so the family line does not follow birthright.

2Judah proved stronger than his brothers, and the ruler came from him, though the birthright belonged to Joseph.

3Reuben, Israel's firstborn, had these sons: Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi.

4Joel's son was Shemaiah, Shemaiah's son Gog, and Gog's son Shimei.

5Micah his son, Reaiah his son, Baal his son.

6Beerah his son, whom Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria took captive—he was chief of the Reubenites.

7His kinsmen by their clans, when their generations were registered, were Jeiel the leader and Zechariah.

8and Bela son of Azaz, son of Shema, son of Joel, who inhabited the region from Aroer to Nebo and Baal-meon.

9Eastward he settled to the edge of the desert from the Euphrates River, since their livestock had grown numerous in Gilead.

10In Saul's days they waged war against the Hagrites, who fell by their hand, and they inhabited their tents throughout all the region east of Gilead.

11The Gadites lived opposite them in the land of Bashan to Salchah.

12Joel the head, Shapham the second, Jaanai, and Shaphat in Bashan.

13Their clansmen from their ancestral houses were Michael, Meshullam, Sheba, Jorai, Jacan, Zia, and Eber—seven.

14They were sons of Abihail son of Huri son of Jaroah son of Gilead son of Michael son of Jeshishai son of Jahdo son of Buz.

15Ahi son of Abdiel son of Guni, head of their clans.

16They lived in Gilead, in Bashan and its villages, and throughout the pastures of Sharon to their borders.

17These were all enrolled according to their family records during Jotham's reign over Judah and Jeroboam's over Israel.

18The Reubenites, Gadites, and half-tribe of Manasseh numbered forty-four thousand seven hundred sixty valiant warriors, men fit to carry shield and sword, shoot a bow, and fight with skill, ready for battle.

19They fought the Hagrites, Jetur, Naphish, and Nodab.

20They were helped against them, and the Hagrites were given into their hand, with all who were with them, for they cried to God in the battle, and he was entreated by them because they trusted in him.

21They captured their livestock—fifty thousand camels, two hundred fifty thousand sheep, two thousand donkeys, and one hundred thousand men.

22Many fell slain, for the battle was from God. They occupied their lands until the captivity.

23The descendants of Manasseh's half tribe lived in the land, spreading from Bashan to Baal-hermon, Senir, and Mount Hermon.

24These were the chiefs of their clans: Epher, Ishi, Eliel, Azriel, Jeremiah, Hodaviah, and Jahdiel, brave warriors, renowned men, and leaders of their clans.

25They acted faithlessly against the God of their fathers and prostituted themselves after the gods of the peoples of the land, whom Yahweh destroyed before them.

26The God of Israel roused the spirit of Pul, king of Assyria, and the spirit of Tilgath-pilneser, king of Assyria, who deported the Reubenites, Gadites, and half tribe of Manasseh to Halah, Habor, Hara, and the Gozan River, to this day.
