Chronicles 23
David was old and satisfied with days, and he made Solomon his son king over Israel.
He assembled all the chiefs of Israel, the priests, and the Levites.
The Levites were counted from age thirty upward, and their headcount, man by man, was thirty-eight thousand.
Of these, twenty-four thousand were to oversee the work of the house of Yahweh, and six thousand were officers and judges.
Four thousand gatekeepers, and four thousand praised Yahweh with the instruments I made for praise.
David divided them into divisions of the sons of Levi: Gershom, Kohath, and Merari.
The Gershonites: Laadan and Shimei.
Laadan's sons: Jehiel the chief, Zetham, and Joel, three.
The sons of Shimei were Shelomith, Haziel, and Haran—three. These were the heads of the fathers of Laadan.
Shimei's sons were Jahath, Zina, Jeush, and Beriah. These four were Shimei's sons.
Jahath was the chief, Zizah the second; but Jeush and Beriah did not multiply sons, and they became one father's house for one reckoning.
The sons of Kohath were Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel—four.
Amram's sons were Aaron and Moses; Aaron was set apart—he and his sons forever—to consecrate the holy of holies, to burn incense before Yahweh, to serve him, and to bless in his name forever.
But the sons of Moses the man of God were named among the tribe of Levi.
The sons of Moses: Gershom and Eliezer.
Shebuel the chief of Gershom's sons.
Eliezer's sons were Rehabiah the chief, and he had no other sons, but Rehabiah's sons multiplied exceedingly.
The sons of Izhar were Shelomith the chief.
Hebron’s sons were Jeriah the chief, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth.
The sons of Uzziel: Micah the chief, and Ishiah the second.
Merari's sons were Mahli and Mushi; Mahli's sons were Eleazar and Kish.
Eleazar died and had no sons, only daughters, and their brothers, the sons of Kish, married them.
Mushi's sons were Mahli, Eder, and Jerimoth—three.
These were the sons of Levi by their fathers' houses—the heads of the fathers in their musters, by number of names head by head—who did the work for service in the house of Yahweh, from twenty years old and upward.
For David said, Yahweh God of Israel has given rest to his people, and he dwells in Jerusalem forever.
The Levites also have no need to carry the tabernacle and all its vessels for its service.
For according to David's final words, they numbered the sons of Levi from twenty years old and upward.
For their station was alongside the sons of Aaron for the service of Yahweh's house, over the courtyards and over the chambers and over the purification of all holy things, and the work of the service of God's house.
for the bread of the arrangement, for flour for the offering, for unleavened wafers, for pan cakes, for fried cakes, and for all measured portions and sizes.
and to stand every morning to give thanks and praise to Yahweh, and likewise at evening.
and to offer all the burnt offerings to Yahweh on Sabbaths, new moons, and appointed feasts, in the number prescribed for them, continually before Yahweh.
and keep the charge of the tent of meeting, the charge of the holy place, and the charge of Aaron's sons their brothers, for service in the house of Yahweh.
