Chronicles 10

The Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines and fell slain on Mount Gilboa.

The Philistines followed closely after Saul and his sons, and they struck Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua, the sons of Saul.

The battle bore heavily against Saul, and the archers overtook him with the bow; he grew distressed from the archers.

Saul said to his weapon bearer, "Draw your sword and pierce me with it, lest these uncircumcised come and mistreat me," but his weapon bearer refused, for he was greatly afraid, so Saul took the sword and fell on it.

His armorbearer saw that Saul was dead, and he himself also fell on the sword and died.

Saul died, and his three sons, and all his house died together.

All the men of Israel in the valley saw that they had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, so they abandoned their cities and fled, and the Philistines came and settled in them.

The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.

They stripped him, took his head and his armor, and sent them throughout the land of the Philistines to proclaim the tidings to their idols and the people.

They set his armor in their gods’ house and fastened his head in Dagon’s house.

Everyone in Jabesh-Gilead heard everything the Philistines had done to Saul.

All the mighty men arose, carried off Saul's body and the bodies of his sons, brought them to Jabesh, buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.

Saul died for his unfaithfulness to Yahweh because of Yahweh's word, which he did not keep, and also for consulting a familiar spirit to inquire.

Because he did not inquire of Yahweh, he killed him and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse.
