Deuteronomy 5

1Moses called all Israel and said to them, "Hear, Israel, the statutes and the ordinances that I speak in your hearing today, so that you learn them, keep them, and do them."

2Yahweh our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.

3Yahweh made this covenant not with our fathers but with us, us who are here today, every one of us alive.

4Yahweh spoke with you face to face on the mountain from the midst of the fire.

5I stood between Yahweh and you at that time to declare his word to you, for you were afraid because of the fire and did not go up the mountain, saying,

6I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out from the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery.

7Do not have other gods before me.

8You shall not make for yourself a carved image, any likeness of what is in the heavens above, or what is in the earth beneath, or what is in the waters under the earth.

9Do not bow down to them or serve them, for I, Yahweh your God, am a jealous God who visits the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me.

10and practices kindness toward thousands of those who love me and guard my commandments.

11You shall not take the name of Yahweh your God falsely, for Yahweh will not acquit whoever takes his name falsely.

12Observe the Sabbath day to keep it holy, as Yahweh your God commanded you.

13Six days you shall labor and do all your work.

14But the seventh day is a sabbath to Yahweh your God—you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock or your sojourner who is in your gates—so that your male servant and your female servant may rest as you do.

15Remember that you were a servant in the land of Egypt, and Yahweh your God brought you out from there with a strong hand and an outstretched arm; therefore Yahweh your God commanded you to observe the Sabbath day.

16Honor your father and your mother, as Yahweh your God commanded you, so that your days may be lengthened and it may go well for you on the land that Yahweh your God is giving you.

17Do not murder.

18You shall not commit adultery.

19Nor shall you steal.

20You shall not give false witness against your neighbor.

21Do not covet your neighbor's wife, nor desire your neighbor's house, his field, his servant, his maid, his ox, his donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

22Yahweh spoke these words to your whole assembly on the mountain from the midst of the fire, the cloud, and the thick darkness with a great voice, and he added no more. He wrote them on two stone tablets and gave them to me.

23When you heard the voice from the midst of the darkness, as the mountain burned with fire, you drew near to me—all the heads of your tribes and your elders.

24And you said, “See, Yahweh our God has revealed his glory and his greatness to us, and we have heard his voice from within the fire; this day we have seen that God speaks with man, and he lives.”

25Now why should we die? For this great fire will devour us: if we keep hearing the voice of Yahweh our God any further, then we will die.

26For who of all flesh has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived?

27Come near, you, and listen carefully to all that Yahweh our God shall say; you speak to us all that Yahweh our God shall speak to you, and we will hear it and do it.

28Yahweh heard the voice of your words as you spoke to me, and Yahweh said to me, "I have heard the voice of this people's words, which they spoke to you—they have spoken well everything they said."

29Who will give them such a heart as this—to fear me and keep all my commandments always—so it goes well for them and their children forever!

30Go, tell them, "Return to your tents."

31But you, stand here with me, and I will tell you the whole commandment, the statutes, and the judgments, which you shall teach them, that they may do them in the land that I am giving them to possess.

32Be careful to do just as Yahweh your God commanded you; do not turn aside to the right or to the left.

33You shall walk in all the way that Yahweh your God has commanded you, so that you may live and it may be good for you, and you may prolong your days in the land that you shall possess.
