Deuteronomy 29
These are the words of the covenant that Yahweh commanded Moses to make with the Israelites in the land of Moab, apart from the covenant he made with them in Horeb.
Moses called all Israel and said to them, “You have seen all that Yahweh did before your eyes in the land of Egypt—to Pharaoh, to all his servants, and to all his land.”
the great trials your eyes saw, the signs, and those great wonders
Yahweh has not given you a heart to understand, eyes to see, or ears to hear, to this day.
I have led you for forty years in the wilderness; your clothes have not worn out on you, and your shoe has not worn out on your foot.
You have not eaten bread, nor have you drunk wine or strong drink, that you may know that I am Yahweh your God.
When you arrived at this place, Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan came out against us for battle, and we struck them.
We took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh.
Observe the words of this covenant and carry them out, so that you succeed in all that you do.
You stand today, all of you, before Yahweh your God: your heads, your tribes, your elders, your officers, every man of Israel.
your children, your wives, and your sojourner who is among your camps, from the one who chops your wood to the one who draws your water.
so that you enter into the covenant of Yahweh your God and into his oath, which Yahweh your God makes with you today.
so that he may establish you today as his people, and he be your God, as he said to you and as he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.
I do not make this covenant and this oath with you alone.
for with the one who is here with us, standing today before Yahweh our God, and with the one who is not here with us today.
For you know how we lived in the land of Egypt and how we passed through the midst of the nations through which you passed.
You have seen their detestable things and their idols—wood and stone, silver and gold—which were among them.
lest there be among you a man or woman or family or tribe whose heart turns away today from Yahweh our God to go serve the gods of those nations; lest there be among you a root bearing gall and wormwood.
And it will happen when he hears the words of this curse, that he blesses himself in his heart, saying, “Peace will be mine, though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart,” so as to add drunkenness to thirst.
Yahweh will not be willing to forgive him, for then his anger and jealousy will smoke against that man, and all the curse written in this book will rest upon him, and Yahweh will erase his name from under the heavens.
Yahweh will single him out for harm from all the tribes of Israel, consistent with all the curses of the covenant written in this book of the law.
The later generation—your children, who will arise after you, and the foreigner coming from a distant land—will say when they see the plagues of that land and the sicknesses with which Yahweh struck it.
Brimstone and salt, a burning—its entire land will not be sown, nor sprout, nor grow any grass—like the overthrow of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboim, which Yahweh overthrew in his anger and wrath.
All the nations will say, “Why has Yahweh treated this land so? What is the heat of this great anger?”
They will answer, “Because they abandoned the covenant of Yahweh, God of their fathers, which he cut with them when he brought them out from the land of Egypt.”
They went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods they did not know and that he had not allotted to them.
Yahweh's anger burned against that land to bring upon it all the curse written in this book.
Yahweh uprooted them from their land in anger and wrath and great indignation, and hurled them into another land, as on this day.
The hidden things belong to Yahweh our God, but the revealed things belong to us and our children forever, to carry out all the words of this law.
