Deuteronomy 24

1When a man takes a wife and marries her, if she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some indecency in her, then he writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it into her hand, and sends her out from his house.

2She leaves his house and goes to be another man's wife.

3If her later husband hates her, writes her a certificate of divorce, puts it in her hand, and sends her from his house; or if that later husband who took her as his wife dies;

4Her first husband who sent her away may not take her back to become his wife after she has been defiled, for it is an abomination before Yahweh. You shall not make the land sin, the land Yahweh your God is giving you as an inheritance.

5When a man takes a new wife, he shall not go out to the army, nor shall any matter be imposed on him; he shall be free at his house for one year, and gladden his wife whom he has taken.

6No one shall take the mill or the upper millstone in pledge, for that pledges a life.

7If a man is found kidnapping one of his kinsmen among the Israelites, and enslaves him or sells him, then that thief shall die; you shall purge the evil from your midst.

8Be careful in cases of leprosy, observing diligently and doing according to all that the priests, the Levites, teach you—as I commanded them—so observe to do it.

9Remember what Yahweh your God did to Miriam on the way when you came out from Egypt.

10When you lend your neighbor any loan, do not enter his house to take his pledge.

11You shall stand outside, and the man to whom you lend shall bring the pledge outside to you.

12If he is an afflicted man, you shall not lie down with his pledge.

13Surely return his pledge when the sun goes down, so he can sleep in his clothes and bless you; it will be righteousness to you before Yahweh your God.

14Do not oppress a hired servant who is poor and needy, whether he is one of your brothers or a sojourner who is in your land in your towns.

15Give him his wages on that day, and do not let the sun set on it, for he is poor and sets his mind on it, lest he cry out against you to Yahweh, and it become sin to you.

16Fathers shall not die for their sons, nor sons for their fathers; every man shall die for his own sin.

17Do not pervert justice for the sojourner or the fatherless, nor take a widow's garment in pledge.

18You shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt, and Yahweh your God redeemed you from there; therefore I command you to do this thing.

19When you reap your harvest in your field and forget a sheaf in the field, do not return to take it; it shall be for the sojourner, the orphan, and the widow, so that Yahweh your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.

20When you beat your olive tree, do not go over it again; it shall be for the sojourner, the orphan, and the widow.

21When you harvest your vineyard, you shall not glean it again; it shall be for the sojourner, the orphan, and the widow.

22Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt; therefore I command you to perform this matter.
