Deuteronomy 13

1If a prophet arises among you, or a dreamer of dreams, and gives you a sign or a wonder,

2And the sign or wonder takes place, which he spoke to you about, saying, “Let us go after other gods you have not known and let us serve them.”

3Do not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams, for Yahweh your God tests you to know whether you love Yahweh your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

4Follow Yahweh your God, fear him, observe his commandments, heed his voice, serve him, and hold fast to him.

5That prophet or that dreamer of dreams shall die, because he spoke rebellion against Yahweh your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of slavery, to lead you astray from the way that Yahweh your God commanded you to follow. Purge the evil from your midst.

6If your brother, the son of your mother, or your son, or your daughter, or the wife of your bosom, or your friend who is as your own soul entices you secretly, saying, “Let us go and serve other gods, which neither you nor your fathers have known,”

7of the gods of the peoples around you, near to you or far from you, from the end of the earth to the end of the earth.

8Do not give in to him or listen to him; do not let your eye pity him, do not spare him, and do not conceal him.

9But you shall kill him; your hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterward the hand of all the people.

10You shall stone him with stones so he dies, because he sought to draw you away from Yahweh your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery.

11All Israel will hear and fear, and will not again do such evil as this in your midst.

12If you hear in one of your cities which Yahweh your God is giving you to live there, saying,

13Worthless men have gone out from among you and have led their city's inhabitants astray, saying, "Let us go and serve other gods, which you have not known."

14You shall inquire, investigate, and ask diligently; and see, if it is true and the matter confirmed, that this abomination has been done among you.

15You shall surely strike that city's residents with the sword's edge, utterly devoting it to destruction with everything in it and its beasts, by the sword's edge.

16You shall gather all its plunder into the middle of its plaza and burn the city and all its plunder completely with fire for Yahweh your God; it shall become a mound forever—it shall not be rebuilt.

17Nothing of the devoted thing shall cling to your hand, so that Yahweh turns from the heat of his anger and grants you mercy and shows you compassion and multiplies you, as he swore to your fathers.

18when you obey the voice of Yahweh your God by keeping all his commandments that I am commanding you today, doing what is right in the eyes of Yahweh your God.
