Romans 4

1What then shall we say that Abraham our forefather has found according to the flesh?

2For if Abraham was justified by works, he has a boast, but not before God.

3For what does Scripture say? Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.

4Now to the one who works, the reward is not credited according to grace but according to debt.

5But to the one who does not work but believes in the one who justifies the ungodly, his faith is reckoned as righteousness.

6Just as David also says the blessedness of the man to whom God counts righteousness without works.

7Blessed are those whose iniquities have been forgiven, and whose sins have been covered.

8Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will not count.

9Is this blessing then for the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised? For we say that faith was credited to Abraham as righteousness.

10How then was it counted? While in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.

11And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of faith while in uncircumcision, to become father of all who believe through uncircumcision, so righteousness might be reckoned to them.

12And father of the circumcised to those not only from circumcision but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith in uncircumcision that belongs to our father Abraham.

13For the promise to Abraham or his offspring, that he would be heir of the world, was not by law but by righteousness by faith.

14For if those of the law are heirs, faith has been emptied, and the promise has been abolished.

15For the law produces wrath, but where no law is, neither is there transgression.

16For this reason it depends on faith, to align with grace and ensure the promise stands firm for all the offspring—not only those from the law, but also those from the faith of Abraham, who is father of us all.

17As it is written, "I have appointed you a father of many nations," before the God whom he believed, who brings the dead to life and calls nonexistent things as though existent.

18Who, beyond hope, believed in hope that he might become a father of many nations, according to what had been said: "So your seed will be."

19And without weakening in faith, he considered his own body already as good as dead—being about a hundred years old—and the deadness of Sarah's womb.

20But concerning God's promise, he did not waver in unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God.

21and being fully convinced that what he had promised he was also able to perform.

22Therefore it was credited to him as righteousness.

23But it was not written for him alone that it was credited to him.

24but also for us, to whom it will be credited, who believe in the one who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.

25who was handed over because of our offenses and was raised because of our justification.
