1Yahweh spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month in the second year after they came out from the land of Egypt, saying,

2Take a head count of all the congregation of the sons of Israel by their families, by their fathers' houses, name by name, every male, head by head.

3From twenty years of age and upward, all who go out with the army in Israel—you and Aaron shall number them by their hosts.

4With you shall be one man for each tribe, each the head of his fathers' house.

5These are the names of the men who will stand with you: for Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur.

6For Simeon: Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai.

7Judah: Nahshon, Amminadab's son.

8From Issachar: Nethaneel son of Zuar.

9From Zebulun: Eliab son of Helon.

10For the sons of Joseph: for Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud; for Manasseh, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur.

11Benjamin: Abidan son of Gideoni.

12Dan: Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai.

13Of Asher: Pagiel son of Ocran.

14For Gad: Eliasaph son of Deuel.

15For Naphtali: Ahira, son of Enan.

16These were the renowned and called of the congregation, princes of their fathers' tribes; they were heads of Israel's thousands.

17Moses and Aaron took these men who were called by name.

18They assembled all the congregation on the first day of the second month, and they enrolled by their families, by their fathers' houses, name by name, from twenty years of age and upward, head by head.

19As Yahweh commanded Moses, he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai.

20And the sons of Reuben, Israel's firstborn, by their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, by the number of their names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, all going out to the army.

21Those mustered of the tribe of Reuben were forty-six thousand five hundred.

22The sons of Simeon, by their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses—those numbered among them by the count of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, all going out to the army.

23Those mustered of the tribe of Simeon were fifty-nine thousand three hundred.

24The sons of Gad, by their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all who go out to war.

25Those mustered of the tribe of Gad were forty-five thousand six hundred fifty.

26Of the sons of Judah, by their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, by the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all going out to the army.

27Those mustered from the tribe of Judah were seventy-four thousand six hundred.

28Issachar's sons by their generations, by their clans, by their fathers' houses, counted by name from twenty years of age upward, all who go out to the army.

29Those numbered of Issachar's tribe were fifty-four thousand four hundred.

30Of the sons of Zebulun, by their generations, families, and fathers' houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all who go out to war.

31Those numbered of the tribe of Zebulun were fifty-seven thousand four hundred.

32Of the sons of Joseph, of the sons of Ephraim, their generations by their families, by the houses of their fathers, according to the count of names, from twenty years old and upward, all going out to the army.

33Those mustered from the tribe of Ephraim were forty thousand five hundred.

34Of the sons of Manasseh, by their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, by the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all going out to the army.

35Those numbered from Manasseh's tribe were thirty-two thousand two hundred.

36Of the sons of Benjamin, by their generations, by their clans, by their ancestral households, by the count of names, from twenty years old and upward, all who could go out to war.

37Those counted of the tribe of Benjamin were thirty-five thousand four hundred.

38Of the sons of Dan, by their generations, by their clans, by the houses of their fathers, by the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all who go out to the army.

39Those mustered from the tribe of Dan totaled sixty-two thousand seven hundred.

40Sons of Asher according to their generations, families, fathers' houses, and number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all going out to the army.

41Those numbered of the tribe of Asher were forty-one thousand five hundred.

42The sons of Naphtali by their generations, by their clans, by their fathers' houses, by the count of names, every man twenty years old and upward who could serve in the army.

43Those mustered of the tribe of Naphtali were fifty-three thousand four hundred.

44These are the ones mustered by Moses, Aaron, and Israel's chiefs: twelve men, each one for his father's house.

45So all those mustered from the sons of Israel by their fathers' houses, from twenty years old and upward, all going out to the army in Israel.

46All those numbered were six hundred thousand, three thousand, five hundred fifty.

47The Levites according to their fathers' tribe were not counted among them.

48Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

49Only do not number the tribe of Levi, and do not count their heads among the sons of Israel.

50Appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, over all its furnishings, and over everything that belongs to it; they shall carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings, serve it, and camp around the tabernacle.

51When the tabernacle sets out, the Levites shall bring it down, and when the tabernacle encamps, the Levites shall raise it, and the stranger who draws near shall die.

52The sons of Israel shall camp, each man by his camp and each man by his standard, according to their armies.

53The Levites shall camp around the dwelling of the testimony, so that no wrath comes upon the assembly of the sons of Israel, and the Levites shall keep the charge of the dwelling of the testimony.

54The sons of Israel did all that Yahweh commanded Moses, so they did.
