Numbers 36

1The heads of the fathers of the family of the sons of Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manasseh, from the families of the sons of Joseph approached and spoke before Moses and before the princes, the heads of the fathers of the sons of Israel.

2They said, "My lord, Yahweh commanded you to give the land as an inheritance by lot to Israel's sons, and my lord was commanded by Yahweh to give our brother Zelophehad's inheritance to his daughters."

3If they become wives to one of the sons of Israel's tribes, their inheritance will be removed from our fathers' inheritance and added to the inheritance of the tribe to which they will belong, and it will be removed from the lot of our inheritance.

4And if the Jubilee comes for the children of Israel, their inheritance will be added to the inheritance of the tribe to which they will belong, and it will be taken away from the inheritance of our fathers' tribe.

5Moses commanded the sons of Israel according to Yahweh's word, saying, "The tribe of Joseph's sons speaks rightly."

6This is the matter that Yahweh commanded concerning Zelophehad's daughters, saying, Let them become wives to whomever seems best in their eyes, but only to the family of their father's tribe shall they become wives.

7No inheritance of the sons of Israel shall pass from tribe to tribe, for the sons of Israel shall each cling to the inheritance of his fathers' tribe.

8Every daughter possessing an inheritance among the tribes of Israel's sons shall become the wife of one man from her father's tribal family, so that Israel's sons may each retain their fathers' inheritance.

9No inheritance shall pass from one tribe to another, for the tribes of the children of Israel shall each cling to their own inheritance.

10As Yahweh commanded Moses, so Zelophehad's daughters did.

11Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah, daughters of Zelophehad, married their uncles' sons.

12They married into the families of the sons of Manasseh son of Joseph, and their inheritance remained in the tribe of their father’s family.

13These are the commandments and judgments that Yahweh commanded by the hand of Moses to the sons of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.
