Numbers 26

1Yahweh said to Moses and to Eleazar son of Aaron the priest, saying,

2Take a headcount of the entire assembly of Israel's sons, from twenty years old and upward, by their fathers' households, all who go out to the army in Israel.

3Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke to them in the plains of Moab beside the Jordan at Jericho, saying.

4From twenty years of age and upward, as Yahweh commanded Moses and the children of Israel who came out from the land of Egypt.

5Reuben, firstborn of Israel; the sons of Reuben: Hanoch, the Hanochite family; Pallu, the Palluite family.

6of Hezron, the Hezronite family; of Carmi, the Carmite family.

7These are the families of the Reubenites, and the ones mustered for them were forty-three thousand seven hundred thirty.

8Pallu's sons: Eliab.

9The sons of Eliab: Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. These are Dathan and Abiram, called and renowned in the congregation, who contended against Moses and against Aaron in Korah's assembly, when they contended against Yahweh.

10The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them along with Korah when the assembly perished as the fire consumed two hundred fifty men, and they became a sign.

11But the sons of Korah did not die.

12Simeon’s sons by their families: of Nemuel, the Nemuelite family; of Jamin, the Jaminite family; of Jachin, the Jachinites family.

13of Zerah, the Zerahite family; of Shaul, the Shaulite family.

14These were the Simeonites' families, twenty-two thousand two hundred.

15The sons of Gad by their families: of Zephon, the Zephonite family; of Haggi, the Haggite family; of Shuni, the Shunite family.

16of Ozni, the Oznite family; of Eri, the Erite family;

17of Arod, the Arodite family; of Areli, the Arelite family.

18These families of the sons of Gad numbered forty thousand five hundred.

19Er and Onan were Judah's sons, and Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan.

20The sons of Judah according to their families were: Shelah's Shelanite family, Perez's Perezite family, and Zerah's Zerahite family.

21Perez's sons were Hezron of the Hezronite family and Hamul of the Hamulite family.

22These are the families of Judah, numbering seventy-six thousand five hundred.

23Issachar's sons by their families: Tola, the Tolaite family; Puvah, the Punite family.

24Jashub, the Jashubite family; Shimron, the Shimronite family.

25These are the families of Issachar according to their numbering: sixty-four thousand three hundred.

26The sons of Zebulun by their families: the family of Sered, the Sardites; the family of Elon, the Elonites; the family of Jahleel, the Jahleelites.

27These are the families of the Zebulunites, from whom sixty thousand five hundred were numbered.

28The sons of Joseph by their families: Manasseh and Ephraim.

29Manasseh's sons: the Machirite family from Machir; Machir fathered Gilead; the Gileadite family from Gilead.

30These are the sons of Gilead: Iezer of the Iezerite family, Helek of the Helekite family.

31and Asriel, the Asrielite family; and Shechem, the Shechemite family.

32Shemida's family, the Shemidaites; Hepher's family, the Hepherites.

33Zelophehad son of Hepher had no sons, only daughters, and the names of Zelophehad's daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

34These were the families of Manasseh, and those mustered among them were fifty-two thousand seven hundred.

35These are the sons of Ephraim by their families: Shuthelah's family, the Shuthelahites; Becher's family, the Becherites; Tahan's family, the Tahanites.

36These are the sons of Shuthelah: Eran’s family, the Eranites.

37These are the families of Ephraim's sons by their count: thirty-two thousand five hundred. These are Joseph's sons by their families.

38Benjamin's sons according to their families: Bela, the family of the Belaites; Ashbel, the family of the Ashbelites; Ahiram, the family of the Ahiramites.

39of Shupham, the Shuphamite family; of Hupham, the Huphamite family.

40The sons of Bela were Ard and Naaman: the Ardites family and the Naamites family of Naaman.

41These are the sons of Benjamin by their families, and those mustered among them totaled forty-five thousand six hundred.

42These are the sons of Dan by their families: Shuham, the family of the Shuhamites. These are the families of Dan by their families.

43All the families of the Shuhamites numbered sixty-four thousand four hundred.

44The sons of Asher by their families: of Imnah, the Imnite family; of Ishvi, the Ishvite family; of Beriah, the Berite family.

45Beriah's sons: of Heber, the Heberite family; of Malchiel, the Malchielite family.

46Serah was the name of Asher's daughter.

47These are the families of Asher's sons by their count: fifty-three thousand four hundred.

48The sons of Naphtali by their families: of Jahzeel, the Jahzeelites family; of Guni, the Gunites family.

49The family of Jezer, the Jezerites; the family of Shillem, the Shillemites.

50These are the families of Naphtali by their families; those counted among them were forty-five thousand four hundred.

51These are those numbered among the sons of Israel: six hundred thousand and one thousand, seven hundred thirty.

52Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

53The land shall be apportioned to these as an inheritance according to the number of names.

54You shall increase his inheritance for the many and decrease it for the few; to each man his inheritance shall be given according to those counted for him.

55Yet the land shall be divided by lot; they shall inherit according to the names of the tribes of their fathers.

56According to the lot their inheritance shall be divided between the many and the few.

57These are the Levites numbered by their families: of Gershon, the Gershonite family; of Kohath, the Kohathite family; of Merari, the Merarite family.

58These are Levi's families: the Libnite family, the Hebronite family, the Mahlite family, the Mushite family, the Korahite family. Kohath fathered Amram.

59Amram's wife was named Jochebed, the daughter of Levi whom she bore to Levi in Egypt; she bore Aaron and Moses and their sister Miriam to Amram.

60Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, were born to Aaron.

61Nadab and Abihu died when they offered strange fire before Yahweh.

62Their count totaled twenty-three thousand, every male from one month old and upward, for they were not counted among the sons of Israel since no inheritance was granted them among the sons of Israel.

63These are those numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who numbered the sons of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.

64Among these there was no man from those counted by Moses and Aaron the priest who counted the sons of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai.

65For Yahweh had said to them they would die in the wilderness, and no man remained from them except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
