Joshua 14

These are the portions that the sons of Israel inherited in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the sons of Israel allotted to them.

Their inheritance was by lot, as Yahweh commanded by the hand of Moses, for the nine tribes and the half-tribe.

For Moses had given an inheritance to the two tribes and the half-tribe beyond the Jordan, but to the Levites he gave no inheritance among them.

For Joseph's sons were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim, and they gave no portion to the Levites in the land, except cities to dwell in, with their pasturelands for their livestock and possessions.

As Yahweh commanded Moses, so the sons of Israel did, and they divided the land.

The sons of Judah approached Joshua at Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, "You know the matter that Yahweh spoke to Moses the man of God about me and about you in Kadesh Barnea."

I was forty years old when Moses the servant of Yahweh sent me from Kadesh-barnea to explore the land, and I brought word back to him as my heart had it.

My brothers who went up with me melted the heart of the people, but I wholly followed Yahweh my God.

Moses swore that day, saying, "Surely the land where your foot has trodden will be an inheritance to you and your children forever, because you have fully followed Yahweh my God."

And now, look, Yahweh has kept me alive, as he said, these forty-five years since Yahweh spoke this word to Moses, while Israel walked in the wilderness; and now, look, today I am eighty-five years old.

I am still as strong today as on the day Moses sent me; as my strength was then, so it is now for war, to go out and to come in.

Now then, give me this mountain that Yahweh spoke of that day, for you heard that day that Anakim were there and great fortified cities. Perhaps Yahweh will be with me, and I will drive them out, just as Yahweh spoke.

Joshua blessed him and gave Hebron to Caleb son of Jephunneh as an inheritance.

Thus Hebron was the inheritance of Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he had wholeheartedly followed Yahweh, God of Israel.

The name of Hebron was formerly Kiriath Arba; Arba was the great man among the Anakim. And the land had rest from war.
