2 Chronicles 12

1When Rehoboam had confirmed his kingdom and grown strong, he abandoned Yahweh's law, and all Israel with him.

2In the fifth year of King Rehoboam, Shishak king of Egypt attacked Jerusalem, because they had acted unfaithfully against Yahweh.

3With twelve hundred chariots and sixty thousand horsemen, and too many people to count who came with him from Egypt: Libyans, Sukkiim, and Cushites.

4He captured the fortified cities of Judah and came to Jerusalem.

5Shemaiah the prophet came to Rehoboam and Judah's princes, who had gathered in Jerusalem because of Shishak, and said to them, "Yahweh declares: You abandoned me, so I have abandoned you into Shishak's hand."

6The princes of Israel and the king humbled themselves and said, "Yahweh is righteous."

7When Yahweh saw that they had humbled themselves, the word of Yahweh came to Shemaiah, saying, "They have humbled themselves; I will not destroy them, but I will give them some deliverance, and my anger will not pour out on Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak."

8But they will be his servants, so they know my service and the service of the kingdoms of the lands.

9Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem and took the treasures of Yahweh's house and the treasures of the king's house—he took everything—and also the gold shields that Solomon had made.

10King Rehoboam made bronze shields instead of them and entrusted them into the hands of the captains of the runners, the guards at the entrance to the king's house.

11Whenever the king entered the house of Yahweh, the guards came and carried them off, returning them to the guards' chamber.

12When he humbled himself, Yahweh's anger turned from him so as not to destroy him utterly; moreover, good things were in Judah.

13King Rehoboam strengthened himself in Jerusalem and reigned, for he was forty-one years old when his reign began, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city Yahweh had chosen from all the tribes of Israel to place his name there; his mother's name was Naamah the Ammonite.

14He did evil because he did not direct his heart to seek Yahweh.

15The former and latter deeds of Rehoboam—are they not recorded in the accounts of Shemaiah the prophet and Iddo the seer regarding genealogies? Wars between Rehoboam and Jeroboam marked all the days.

16Rehoboam lay down with his fathers and was buried in David's city, and Abijah his son reigned in his place.
