Acts 4

1While they spoke to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees came upon them.

2Being indignant that they taught the people and announced in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.

3And they laid hands on them and put them under guard until the next day, for it was already evening.

4But many of those who heard the word believed, and the number of men reached about five thousand.

5The next day their rulers, elders, and scribes assembled in Jerusalem.

6And Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and as many as were of the high priestly family.

7And when they had placed them in their midst, they asked, "With what power, or with what name, did you do this?"

8Then, filled with the Holy Spirit, Peter said to them, "Rulers of the people and elders,"

9If we are questioned today about a kindness to a helpless man, by what means has this man been healed?

10Let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by him this man stands before you whole.

11He is the stone rejected by you, the builders, which has become the head of the corner.

12And there is no salvation in anyone else, for no other name under heaven has been given among people by which we must be saved.

13As they observed the boldness of Peter and John and realized they were unlettered laymen, they were amazed and recognized them as men who had been with Jesus.

14And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to contradict.

15Having commanded them to go outside the council, they conferred among themselves.

16Saying, "What shall we do with these men? For indeed a known sign has taken place through them, manifest to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it."

17But to keep it from spreading any further among the people, let us threaten them not to speak any longer to anyone in this name.

18And summoning them, they commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.

19But Peter and John replied to them, "Is it right before God to listen to you rather than God? You judge."

20For we cannot refrain from speaking what we saw and heard.

21But after further threatening them, they released them, finding no way to punish them because of the people, since all were glorifying God for what had happened.

22For the man on whom this sign of healing had occurred was over forty years old.

23After being released, they went to their own people and reported everything the chief priests and elders had said to them.

24When they heard, with one mind they raised their voice to God and said, "Master, you who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all things in them."

25who through the Holy Spirit by the mouth of our father David your servant said, "Why did nations rage and peoples plot empty things?"

26The kings of the earth arrayed themselves, and the rulers assembled against the Lord and against his Christ.

27For indeed they gathered in this city against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed—both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with Gentiles and the people of Israel.

28to do all that your hand and your counsel had predetermined to take place.

29And now, Lord, look upon their threats, and grant all boldness to your servants to speak your word.

30while you extend your hand to bring healing, and signs and wonders take place through the name of your holy servant Jesus.

31And when they had prayed, the place where they were gathered shook, all were filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke God's word boldly.

32And the multitude of those who believed was one heart and one soul, nor did any one of them claim that anything among his possessions was his own, but all things were common to them.

33And with great power the apostles gave testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.

34For no one among them was needy, for as many as owned lands or houses sold them and brought the prices of the things sold.

35and they placed them at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to each according as anyone had need.

36Joseph, called Barnabas by the apostles—which means Son of Encouragement—a Levite, a Cypriot by race.

37Having a field, he sold it, brought the money, and laid it at the apostles' feet.
