Acts 20

1After the uproar ceased, Paul summoned the disciples, encouraged them, embraced them, and set out for Macedonia.

2After passing through those regions and exhorting them with many words, he came to Greece.

3After staying three months, and when a plot against him by the Jews arose as he was about to sail to Syria, he resolved to return through Macedonia.

4Sopater, son of Pyrrhus from Berea, accompanied him, along with Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica, Gaius from Derbe and Timothy, and Tychicus and Trophimus from Asia.

5But these had come before and were waiting for us at Troas.

6But we set sail from Philippi after the days of unleavened bread and came to them at Troas in five days, where we stayed seven days.

7On the first day of the week, when we had assembled to break bread, Paul reasoned with them, intending to depart the next day, and prolonged his message until midnight.

8There were plenty of lamps in the upper room where we were gathered.

9A certain young man named Eutychus sat at the window, weighed down by deep sleep while Paul spoke on at greater length; overcome by sleep, he fell down from the third story and was picked up dead.

10Paul went down, fell on him, and embracing him said, "Do not be alarmed, for his life is in him."

11Then he went up, broke the bread and ate, conversed at length until daybreak, and departed.

12They brought the boy alive, and were exceedingly comforted.

13But we went ahead to the ship and sailed toward Assos, intending from there to pick up Paul, for he had arranged it that way, himself planning to go on foot.

14When he met us at Assos, we picked him up and arrived at Mitylene.

15From there we sailed away and arrived opposite Chios the next day; the following day we drew alongside Samos, and the day after we came to Miletus.

16For Paul had resolved to sail past Ephesus, so he might avoid lingering in Asia; for he was hurrying, if feasible for him, to arrive in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost.

17From Miletus he sent to Ephesus and summoned the elders of the church.

18When they came to him, he said to them, "You know, from the first day I arrived in Asia, how I was with you the whole time."

19serving the Lord with all humility and tears and trials that happened to me through the plots of the Jews.

20how I held nothing beneficial back, declaring it to you and teaching you publicly and house to house.

21testifying both to Jews and Greeks repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus.

22And now, behold, bound by the Spirit, I go to Jerusalem, not knowing the things there that will befall me.

23except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me in every city, saying that bonds and hardships await me.

24But I make no account of my life as precious to myself, so as to finish my race and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to solemnly testify to the gospel of God's grace.

25And now, look, I know that you all, among whom I went proclaiming the kingdom, will see my face no more.

26Therefore I bear witness to you today that I am innocent of the blood of all people.

27For I did not hold back from declaring to you the whole counsel of God.

28Keep watch over yourselves and over all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has set you as overseers to shepherd the church of God, which he purchased with his own blood.

29I know that after my departure savage wolves will enter among you, not sparing the flock.

30Men will arise from among you yourselves, speaking distortions to draw the disciples after themselves.

31Therefore, stay alert, remembering that for three years, night and day, with tears I did not cease warning each one.

32And now I entrust you to God and to the word of his grace, which can build up and give the inheritance among all those who are sanctified.

33I did not covet anyone's silver or gold or garments.

34You yourselves know that these hands served my needs and those who were with me.

35In everything I showed you that by working hard you must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that he himself said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

36And after saying these things, he bowed his knees and prayed with all of them.

37Much weeping arose from them all, and falling on Paul's neck, they kissed him.

38Grieving most of all over the word he had spoken—that they would no longer see his face—they escorted him to the ship.
