Acts 13

1In the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas and Simeon called Niger, Lucius the Cyrenian, Manaen the foster-brother of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.

2As they served the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, "Set Barnabas and Saul apart for me for the work to which I have called them."

3Then, having fasted and prayed and laid hands on them, they sent them away.

4So, having been sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia; from there they sailed to Cyprus.

5And arriving at Salamis, they preached God's word in the synagogues of the Jews, and they had John also as their attendant.

6When they had passed through the whole island to Paphos, they found a certain man—a sorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew—called Bar-Jesus.

7Who was with the proconsul Sergius Paulus, an intelligent man. He called Barnabas and Saul, eager to hear the word of God.

8But Elymas the sorcerer—for thus his name is interpreted—withstood them, seeking to turn the proconsul from the faith.

9But Saul, also Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, fixed his gaze on him.

10He said, "O full of all deceit and all mischief, son of the devil, enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease perverting the Lord's straight ways?"

11And now, look—the Lord's hand is upon you, and you will be blind, unable to see the sun for a time. Immediately mist and darkness fell on him, and groping about he sought people to guide him by the hand.

12Then the proconsul, seeing what had happened, believed, astonished at the Lord's teaching.

13Setting sail from Paphos, those with Paul came to Perga in Pamphylia, but John departed from them and returned to Jerusalem.

14But passing through from Perga, they arrived at Antioch in Pisidia, and entering the synagogue on the Sabbath day, they sat down.

15After the reading of the law and the prophets, the synagogue rulers sent to them, saying, "Men, brothers, if any word of exhortation for the people is among you, speak."

16Paul arose, motioned with his hand, and said, "Men, Israelites, and you who fear God, listen."

17God of this people Israel chose our fathers, exalted the people during their sojourn in the land of Egypt, and with an uplifted arm led them out of it.

18And for about forty years he endured their ways in the wilderness.

19And after overthrowing seven nations in the land of Canaan, he allotted their land to them.

20for about four hundred and fifty years. After this he gave them judges until Samuel the prophet.

21Afterward they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man from the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years.

22After removing him, he raised up David as their king, to whom he also testified: "I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my heart, who will do all my will."

23God brought Israel a Savior, Jesus, from this man's seed according to the promise.

24Before his coming, John had proclaimed beforehand a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.

25As John was completing his course, he said, "What do you suppose I am? I am not he. But look, one comes after me, whose sandals I am not worthy to untie."

26Men, brothers, children of Abraham's stock, and those among you who fear God, the word of this salvation has been sent to us.

27For those dwelling in Jerusalem and their rulers, ignorant of him and the voices of the prophets that are read every Sabbath, fulfilled them by condemning him.

28Though they found no cause of death, they asked Pilate to put him to death.

29When they had completed all that had been written about him, they brought him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb.

30However, God raised him from the dead.

31who was seen for many days by those who had come up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who now are his witnesses to the people.

32And we bring you good news of the promise made to the fathers.

33God has fulfilled this to us their children by raising up Jesus, as it is also written in the second psalm: "You are my Son; today I have begotten you."

34And in that he raised him from the dead, no longer about to return to corruption, he has declared: "I will give you the holy and faithful mercies of David."

35Therefore he also says elsewhere: 'You will not let your holy one see corruption.'

36For David indeed, having served God's purpose in his own generation, fell asleep, was gathered to his fathers, and saw decay.

37But the one God raised saw no corruption.

38Therefore let it be known to you, brothers, that through this one forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, and release from all things in which you could not be justified by the law of Moses.

39Through him everyone who believes is justified from everything, from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses.

40Beware therefore, lest what has been spoken in the prophets come upon you.

41Look, you scoffers, marvel and vanish; for I am doing a deed in your days, a deed you will by no means believe if anyone declares it to you.

42As they were leaving, they begged that these words might be spoken to them the next Sabbath.

43When the synagogue dismissed, many of the Jews and devout proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who spoke to them and urged them to remain in God's grace.

44On the coming Sabbath, almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord.

45But when the Jews saw the crowds, jealousy filled them, and they contradicted what Paul was saying, blaspheming.

46Paul and Barnabas spoke boldly and said, "It was necessary for God's word to be spoken to you first. Since you reject it and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, look, we turn to the Gentiles."

47For the Lord has thus commanded us: "I have set you as a light of the Gentiles, to be salvation to the ends of the earth."

48As the Gentiles heard, they rejoiced and glorified the word of the Lord, and all who were appointed to eternal life believed.

49And the word of the Lord spread through the whole region.

50But the Jews incited the devout and respectable women along with the leading men of the city, roused persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove them out of their borders.

51But they shook the dust from their feet against them and came to Iconium.

52And the disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.
