Jeremiah 49

1Concerning Ammon's sons, thus says Yahweh: Has Israel no sons? Has he no heir? Why then does their king possess Gad, and his people dwell in its cities?

2Therefore behold, days are coming—oracle of Yahweh—when I will bring a battle shout against Rabbah of Ammon's sons; she will become a desolate mound, her daughters burned with fire, and Israel will dispossess his dispossessors, says Yahweh.

3Wail, Heshbon, for Ai lies ruined; cry out, daughters of Rabbah, gird on sackcloth, lament, and race through the walls—for their king will go into exile, his priests and his princes together.

4Why do you boast in the valleys, your flowing valley, backsliding daughter who trusts in her treasuries, saying, "Who will come to me?"

5Behold, I am bringing terror upon you, declares Lord Yahweh of hosts, from all around you; and you will be driven away, every man headlong before him, with none to gather the fugitives.

6But afterward I will restore the fortunes of the sons of Ammon, declares Yahweh.

7Concerning Edom, thus says Yahweh of hosts: Is wisdom still present in Teman? Has counsel been destroyed from the discerning? Has their wisdom departed?

8Flee, turn back, dwell deep, inhabitants of Dedan, for I will bring Esau's calamity upon him, the time I visit him.

9If grape gatherers came to you, would they not leave gleanings? If thieves by night, would they not destroy until they had enough?

10For I have stripped Esau bare, uncovered his hiding places, and he cannot hide; his offspring is plundered, his kinsmen and neighbors, and he is no more.

11Leave your orphans; I will keep them alive, and let your widows trust in me.

12For thus says Yahweh: Behold, those for whom there was no judgment to drink the cup have drunk and will drink; are you the one who will be altogether blameless? You will not be blameless, for you will surely drink.

13For I have sworn by myself, declares Yahweh, that Bozrah will become a desolation, a reproach, a dry waste, and a curse; and all its cities will become eternal ruins.

14I have heard a report from Yahweh, and a messenger is sent among the nations: "Gather together, come against her, and rise up to the battle."

15For look, I have made you small among the nations, despised among people.

16Your terror has deceived you, the pride of your heart—you who dwell in the clefts of the rock, who hold the height of the hill: though you exalt your nest like the eagle, from there I will bring you down, says Yahweh.

17Edom will become a desolation; all who pass by it will be appalled and will hiss at all its wounds.

18Like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and its neighbors, says Yahweh, no man will dwell there, nor will any son of man reside in it.

19Behold, like a lion he rises from the Jordan's majesty against the mighty fold; for I will suddenly drive him away from her, and who is the chosen one whom I will station over her? For who is like me? And who will set a time for me? And who is this shepherd who will stand before me?

20Therefore hear Yahweh's counsel that he planned against Edom and his purposes that he formed against Teman's inhabitants: Will not the flock's little ones drag them away? Will he not make their fold desolate over them?

21The earth quaked at the sound of their falling; the outcry's sound was heard in the Red Sea.

22See, like an eagle he will rise up and fly, spreading his wings over Bozrah; that day the hearts of Edom's champions will be like a woman's heart in labor.

23To Damascus: Hamath is ashamed, and Arpad, for they have heard an evil report; they faint, dread is on the sea, quiet cannot hold.

24Damascus weakens, turning to flee as trembling seizes her; distress and pangs grip her like a woman in labor.

25How is the city of praise not abandoned, my city of mirth?

26Therefore her young men will fall in her streets, and all the men of war will be silenced in that day, declares Yahweh of hosts.

27I will set the wall of Damascus on fire, and it will devour Ben-hadad's palaces.

28Against Kedar and the kingdoms of Hazor, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon struck, thus says Yahweh: Arise, go up to Kedar, and plunder the sons of the east.

29They will take their tents and their flocks, carry off their curtains, all their utensils, and their camels for themselves, and cry out against them, "Terror all around!"

30Dwellers of Hazor, flee away, wander very far off, dwell deep, says Yahweh, for Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has advised counsel against you, and has reckoned a purpose against you.

31Rise up and advance against the nation at peace that dwells confidently, declares Yahweh; they have no gates or bars and dwell alone.

32Their camels will become booty, and the multitude of their livestock spoil; I will scatter them to every wind, those with cut corners, and from all their sides I will bring their calamity, says Yahweh.

33Hazor will become a haunt for jackals, a desolation forever—no man will dwell there, nor will any son of man live in it.

34Yahweh's word that came to Jeremiah the prophet about Elam, at the beginning of Zedekiah's reign as king of Judah, saying,

35Thus declares Yahweh of hosts: "Look, I will break Elam's bow, the chief of their might."

36I will bring four winds upon Elam from the four corners of the heavens and scatter them toward all those winds; there will be no nation where the outcasts of Elam will not come.

37I will terrify Elam before their enemies and before those seeking their lives, and I will bring calamity upon them, the fury of my anger, declares Yahweh; and I will send the sword after them until I have destroyed them.

38I will place my throne in Elam, and destroy from there the king and the princes, says Yahweh.

39But in the latter days it will be that I will bring back Elam's captives, declares Yahweh.
