Jeremiah 28

It happened in that year, at the beginning of Zedekiah's reign as king of Judah, in the fourth year, in the fifth month, that Hananiah son of Azzur the prophet from Gibeon spoke to me in the house of Yahweh, in the sight of the priests and all the people, saying,

Thus says Yahweh of hosts, God of Israel: I have broken the yoke of Babylon's king.

Within two full years I will return to this place all the vessels of Yahweh's house that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took from this place and brought to Babylon.

And I will bring back to this place Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and all the captives of Judah who went to Babylon, declares Yahweh, for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.

Then Jeremiah the prophet said to Hananiah the prophet before the priests and all the people standing in Yahweh's house,

Jeremiah the prophet said, "Amen! May Yahweh do so; may Yahweh fulfill your words that you prophesied, to bring back the vessels of Yahweh's house and all the exiles from Babylon to this place."

However, hear now this word that I speak in your ears and in the ears of all the people.

The prophets who were before me and before you from ancient times prophesied against many lands and great kingdoms of war, disaster, and plague.

The prophet who prophesies peace will be known as one truly sent by Yahweh when that prophet's word comes to pass.

Hananiah the prophet took the yoke from off Jeremiah the prophet's neck and broke it.

Hananiah spoke in the sight of all the people, saying, "Thus says Yahweh: Even so will I break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the neck of all nations within two years." Then the prophet Jeremiah went on his way.

Then the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah after Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke from off the neck of Jeremiah the prophet, saying,

Go and say to Hananiah: Thus says Yahweh, "You have broken the wooden bars, but you will make iron bars in their place."

For thus says Yahweh of hosts, God of Israel: I have put an iron yoke on the neck of all these nations to serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and they will serve him; I have also given him the beasts of the field.

Jeremiah the prophet said to Hananiah the prophet, "Listen now, Hananiah: Yahweh has not sent you, but you have caused this people to trust in a lie."

Therefore thus says Yahweh: “Behold, I am sending you away from the face of the earth; you will die this year, because you have spoken rebellion against Yahweh.”

Hananiah the prophet died that year in the seventh month.
