1 Kings 4

1Solomon the king was king over all Israel.

2These were his chiefs: Azariah son of Zadok the priest.

3Elihoreph and Ahijah, sons of Shisha, scribes; Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud, recorder.

4Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the army, and Zadok and Abiathar were priests.

5And Azariah son of Nathan oversaw the deputies; Zabud son of Nathan was priest and friend of the king.

6And Ahishar was in charge of the household, and Adoniram son of Abda was in charge of the forced labor.

7Solomon had twelve officers over all Israel who provided for the king and his household, each one providing for one month in the year.

8These are their names: Ben-Hur, in the hill country of Ephraim.

9Ben Deker in Makaz, Shaalbim, Beth Shemesh, and Elon Beth Hanan.

10Ben Hesed, in Aruboth, had Socoh and all the land of Hepher.

11Ben Abinadab, in all the uplands of Dor; Taphath, Solomon's daughter, was his wife.

12Baana son of Ahilud—in Taanach and Megiddo, and all Beth-shean by Zarethan under Jezreel, from Beth-shean to Abel-meholah, reaching beyond Jokmeam.

13Ben Geber in Ramoth-gilead—to him belonged the towns of Jair son of Manasseh, which lay in Gilead; to him belonged the region of Argob in Bashan, sixty great walled cities with bronze bars.

14Ahinadab son of Iddo in Mahanaim

15Ahimaaz in Naphtali, who also took Basemath daughter of Solomon as his wife.

16Baana son of Hushai, in Asher and Bealoth.

17Jehoshaphat son of Paruah, in Issachar.

18Shimei, Elah's son, in Benjamin;

19Geber son of Uri was the only officer in the land of Gilead—the land of Sihon king of the Amorites and Og king of Bashan.

20Judah and Israel were as many as the sand by the sea in great abundance, eating, drinking, and rejoicing.

21Solomon had dominion over all the kingdoms from the River to the country of the Philistines and to the border of Egypt; they offered tribute and served Solomon all the days of his life.

22Solomon's bread for one day was thirty cors of fine flour and sixty cors of meal.

23ten fat oxen, twenty oxen from the pastures, and a hundred sheep, besides stags, gazelles, roebucks, and fattened fowl.

24For he ruled all beyond the River, from Tiphsah to Gaza, all the kings beyond the River, and peace was his from every side around him.

25Judah and Israel dwelt securely, every man under his vine and under his fig tree, from Dan to Beersheba, all the days of Solomon.

26Solomon had forty thousand stalls for his chariot horses, and twelve thousand horsemen.

27These officers sustained King Solomon and all who drew near to King Solomon's table, each man in his month; they lacked nothing.

28They brought barley and straw for the horses and swift steeds to the place where each man was, according to his charge.

29God gave Solomon wisdom and exceedingly great understanding, along with breadth of heart like the sand on the seashore.

30Solomon's wisdom surpassed the wisdom of all the sons of the east and all the wisdom of Egypt.

31He was wiser than all people, than Ethan the Ezrahite, Heman, Calcol, and Darda, sons of Mahol, and his fame was in all the surrounding nations.

32He proclaimed three thousand proverbs, and his songs were one thousand five.

33He spoke about trees, from the cedar in Lebanon to the hyssop that sprouts from the wall; he also spoke about animals, birds, creeping things, and fish.

34People from all nations came to hear Solomon's wisdom, from all the earth's kings who had heard his wisdom.
