1 Kings 14

1At that time Abijah son of Jeroboam fell sick.

2Jeroboam said to his wife, "Get up now and disguise yourself so they do not recognize that you yourself are Jeroboam's wife, and go to Shiloh—look, Ahijah the prophet is there, the one who declared about me that I would be king over this people."

3Take ten loaves, some cakes, and a jar of honey in your hand, and go to him. He will tell you what will become of the boy.

4Jeroboam's wife acted accordingly, arose, went to Shiloh, and came to Ahijah's house. Ahijah could not see, for his eyes had dimmed from age.

5Yahweh said to Ahijah, "See, Jeroboam's wife is coming to seek a word from you about her son, for he is sick. This is what you must say to her, for when she arrives she will pretend to be a stranger."

6When Ahijah heard the sound of her footsteps as she entered the doorway, he said, "Come in, Jeroboam's wife—why are you disguising yourself as a stranger? I am sent to you with grievous news."

7Go, tell Jeroboam: Thus says Yahweh, God of Israel, because I raised you from among the people and set you as ruler over my people Israel.

8I tore the kingdom from David's house and gave it to you, yet you have not been like my servant David, who kept my commandments and followed me with his whole heart to do only what was right in my eyes.

9You have done more evil than all who were before you, and you went and made yourself other gods and molten images to anger me, and you have thrust me behind your back.

10Therefore, see, I am bringing disaster on Jeroboam's house, and I will cut off from Jeroboam everyone who urinates against a wall—whether kept in or left at large in Israel—and I will sweep away what remains of Jeroboam's house, as one sweeps away dung until it is all gone.

11Dogs will eat anyone of Jeroboam who dies in the city, and birds of the sky will eat anyone who dies in the field, for Yahweh has spoken.

12As for you, get up and go to your house; when your feet enter the city, the child will die.

13All Israel will mourn for him and bury him, for only he of Jeroboam will come to the grave, because a good thing toward Yahweh, God of Israel, is found in him in the house of Jeroboam.

14Yahweh will raise up for him a king over Israel who will cut off Jeroboam's house this very day—what, even now?

15Yahweh will strike Israel like a reed shaking in the water, he will uproot Israel from this good land that he gave their fathers, and disperse them beyond the river, because they made their Asherim that anger Yahweh.

16He will hand Israel over because of Jeroboam's sins, which he committed and by which he led Israel to sin.

17Jeroboam's wife arose, went out, and came to Tirzah, and when she came to the threshold of the house, the child died.

18All Israel buried him and mourned for him, according to the word of Yahweh which he spoke by the hand of his servant Ahijah the prophet.

19The rest of Jeroboam's deeds, how he fought and how he reigned—behold, they are written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel.

20The days that Jeroboam reigned were twenty-two years, and he slept with his fathers, and Nadab his son reigned in his place.

21Rehoboam son of Solomon was king in Judah. He was forty-one years old at the start of his reign and ruled seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city Yahweh chose from all the tribes of Israel to place his name there. His mother's name was Naamah the Ammonite.

22Judah did what was evil in Yahweh's eyes, and they incited his jealousy with their sins that they had committed, more than all that their fathers had done.

23They also built high places, pillars, and Asherim for themselves on every high hill and under every flourishing tree.

24Even male cult prostitutes were present in the land, and they adopted every detestable practice of the nations that Yahweh had dispossessed from before the sons of Israel.

25In the fifth year of King Rehoboam, Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem.

26He took the treasures of Yahweh's house and the treasures of the king's house—even everything—and he took all the gold shields that Solomon had made.

27King Rehoboam made bronze shields in their place and entrusted them to the hands of the captains of the runners who kept watch at the door of the king's house.

28Whenever the king entered the house of Yahweh, the guards carried them and brought them back to the guards' chamber.

29The rest of Rehoboam's deeds, and all that he did, are they not recorded in the book of the records of the days of the kings of Judah?

30Rehoboam and Jeroboam were at war all their days.

31Rehoboam lay down with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of David. His mother's name was Naamah the Ammonitess, and Abijam his son reigned in his place.
