1 Kings 17

1Elijah the Tishbite, a sojourner of Gilead, said to Ahab, "Yahweh the God of Israel lives, before whom I stand: no dew or rain will come during these years, except by my word."

2Yahweh's word came to him, saying,

3Go from here, turn eastward, and hide yourself by the Cherith brook, which faces the Jordan.

4You will drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to sustain you there.

5He went and did according to the word of Yahweh; he went and lived by the Cherith brook, which lies before the Jordan.

6The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook.

7After some days the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land.

8The word of Yahweh came to him, saying,

9Get up, go to Zarephath of Sidon, and stay there. See, I have charged a widow there to provide for you.

10He arose and went to Zarephath, and when he came to the city gate, there was a widow woman gathering wood. He called to her and said, "Please get me a little water in a vessel so I can drink."

11When she went to get it, he called to her and said, "Please bring me a morsel of bread in your hand."

12She said, “As Yahweh your God lives, I have no cake—only a handful of flour in the jar and a little oil in the jug. Here I am, gathering two sticks so I can go in and prepare it for me and my son, that we may eat it and die.”

13Elijah said to her, "Do not be afraid; go and do as you said, but first make me a little cake from it and bring it out to me, and afterward make for you and your son."

14For thus says Yahweh, God of Israel: the jar of flour will not be consumed, nor the jug of oil lack, until the day Yahweh gives rain upon the face of the ground.

15She went and did according to Elijah's word, and she and he and her house ate many days.

16The jar of flour did not run out, nor did the jug of oil lack, according to the word of Yahweh that he spoke through Elijah.

17After these events, the son of the woman who owned the house became ill, and his illness grew so severe that no breath remained in him.

18She said to Elijah, "What is between me and you, man of God? Have you come to me to bring my iniquity to remembrance and to kill my son?"

19He said to her, “Give me your son.” He took him from her bosom, carried him up to the upper room where he was staying there, and laid him on his bed.

20He called to Yahweh and said, "Yahweh my God, have you even afflicted the widow with whom I am staying by putting her son to death?"

21He stretched himself upon the child three times, called to Yahweh, and said, "Yahweh my God, please let this child's soul return within him."

22Yahweh heard Elijah's voice, the child's soul returned within him, and he lived.

23Elijah took the child and carried him down from the upper room into the house, then gave him to his mother; Elijah said, "Look, your son is alive."

24The woman said to Elijah, "Now this I know—that you are a man of God, and that the word of Yahweh in your mouth is truth."
