Nehemiah 7

1When the wall was finished and I had installed the doors, the gatekeepers, singers, and Levites were appointed.

2I entrusted Jerusalem to my brother Hanani and Hananiah the citadel commander, for he was trustworthy and revered God more than most.

3I said to them, "Do not allow the gates of Jerusalem to be opened until the sun is hot; and while they stand guard, let them shut the doors and bar them: and appoint watches of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, each one in his watch, and each one near his house."

4The city was broad and vast, but the people inside were few, and the houses were not built.

5My God directed me to assemble the leaders, the officials, and the people for enrollment by family records. I discovered the registry of those who returned first, and found their lineages documented in it.

6These are the people of the province who came up from the exile, those whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had deported, returning to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own city.

7who returned with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, and Baanah. This is the count of Israel's men:

8The sons of Parosh numbered two thousand one hundred seventy-two.

9The descendants of Shephatiah, three hundred seventy-two.

10The children of Arah, six hundred fifty-two.

11The sons of Pahath-moab from the sons of Jeshua and Joab, two thousand eight hundred eighteen.

15The sons of Binnui, six hundred forty-eight.

16The descendants of Bebai numbered six hundred twenty-eight.

33The men from the other Nebo, fifty-two.

34The men of the other Elam, one thousand two hundred fifty-four.

35The sons of Harim, three hundred twenty.

38The descendants of Senaah, three thousand nine hundred thirty.

39The priests: descendants of Jedaiah from Jeshua's house, nine hundred seventy-three.

43The Levites: sons of Jeshua and Kadmiel and sons of Hodevah, seventy-four.

44The singers: the sons of Asaph, one hundred forty-eight.

45The gatekeepers: the sons of Shallum, the sons of Ater, the sons of Talmon, the sons of Akkub, the sons of Hatita, the sons of Shobai, one hundred thirty-eight.

56the sons of Neziah, the sons of Hatipha.

57The sons of Solomon's servants: the sons of Sotai, the sons of Sophereth, the sons of Perida,

58The descendants of Jaala, the descendants of Darkon, the descendants of Giddel,

59the sons of Shephatiah, the sons of Hattil, the sons of Pochereth Hazzebaim, the sons of Amon.

60The Nethinim and the children of Solomon's servants numbered three hundred ninety-two.

61Those from Tel Melah, Tel Harsha, Cherub, Addon, and Immer also returned, but they were unable to name their ancestral families or trace their lineage to confirm they were Israelites.

62The sons of Delaiah, the sons of Tobiah, the sons of Nekoda, six hundred forty-two.

63Of the priests: the sons of Hobaiah, the sons of Hakkoz, the sons of Barzillai, who married a daughter of Barzillai the Gileadite and was called by their name.

64These sought their family records in the genealogies but did not find them, so they were considered unclean and excluded from the priesthood.

65The governor told them not to eat any of the holiest offerings until a priest with Urim and Thummim should arise.

66The entire assembly numbered forty-two thousand three hundred sixty.

67apart from their male servants and female servants, numbering seven thousand three hundred thirty-seven, they had two hundred forty-five male singers and female singers.

68Their horses numbered seven hundred thirty-six, their mules two hundred forty-five.

69Camels, four hundred thirty-five; donkeys, six thousand seven hundred twenty.

70Some of the heads of the fathers gave to the work. The Tirshatha gave to the treasury a thousand gold darics, fifty basins, and five hundred thirty priests' garments.

71Some of the heads of the fathers gave twenty thousand darics of gold and two thousand two hundred minas of silver to the treasury of the work.

72What the rest of the people gave was twenty thousand darics of gold, two thousand minas of silver, and sixty-seven priests' garments.

73The priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, some from the people, the Nethinim, and all Israel settled in their cities. When the seventh month arrived, the children of Israel were in their cities.
