2 Kings 14

1In the second year of Joash son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel, Amaziah son of Joash, king of Judah, began to reign.

2He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jehoaddan from Jerusalem.

3He did what was right in Yahweh's eyes, but not like his father David: he did everything his father Joash did.

4But the high places were not removed; the people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places.

5When the kingdom grew strong in his hand, he killed his servants who had killed the king his father.

6But he did not put the murderers' sons to death, as written in the book of the law of Moses, which Yahweh commanded: "Fathers shall not be put to death for sons, nor sons for fathers, but every man shall be put to death for his own sin."

7He struck down ten thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt, captured Sela in battle, and named it Joktheel to this day.

8Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash son of Jehoahaz son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, "Come, let us see one another face to face."

9Jehoash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, "The thistle in Lebanon sent to the cedar in Lebanon, saying, 'Give your daughter to my son for a wife, but a beast of the field in Lebanon passed by and trampled the thistle.'"

10You have indeed beaten Edom, and your heart has lifted you up. Take honor in it and stay in your house. Why provoke harm, so that you fall—you and Judah with you?

11Amaziah did not listen, so Jehoash king of Israel advanced, and he and Amaziah king of Judah faced each other at Beth-shemesh, which is in Judah.

12Judah was beaten before Israel, and they fled, every man to his tent.

13Jehoash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, son of Jehoash son of Ahaziah, at Beth-shemesh, they came to Jerusalem, and he breached Jerusalem's wall from Ephraim Gate to Corner Gate, four hundred cubits.

14He took all the gold and the silver, all the vessels found in Yahweh's house and in the king's treasuries, the hostages as well, and returned to Samaria.

15The rest of Jehoash's deeds—what he accomplished, his power, and how he fought against Amaziah king of Judah—are they not recorded in the book of the daily events of Israel's kings?

16Jehoash rested with his fathers and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel, and Jeroboam his son reigned in his place.

17Amaziah son of Joash, king of Judah, lived fifteen years after the death of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel.

18The remaining deeds of Amaziah—are they not recorded in the book of the daily records of the kings of Judah?

19They plotted a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish; they sent after him to Lachish and killed him there.

20They carried him on horses, and he was buried in Jerusalem with his fathers in the city of David.

21All the people of Judah took Azariah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king in place of his father Amaziah.

22He built Elath and returned it to Judah after the king slept with his fathers.

23In the fifteenth year of Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah, Jeroboam son of Joash king of Israel reigned in Samaria forty-one years.

24He did evil in Yahweh's sight; he did not turn from all the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who caused Israel to sin.

25He brought back Israel's border from the entrance to Hamath to the sea of the Arabah, according to the word of Yahweh, God of Israel, which he spoke through his servant Jonah son of Amittai the prophet who was from Gath-hepher.

26For Yahweh saw Israel's very bitter affliction, for there was none restrained, none forsaken, and no helper for Israel.

27Yahweh did not speak of blotting out the name of Israel from under heaven, but he saved them by the hand of Jeroboam son of Joash.

28The rest of Jeroboam's acts, all that he accomplished, his might, how he fought, and how he restored Damascus and Hamath of Judah for Israel, are they not recorded in the book of the daily records of Israel's kings?

29Jeroboam lay down with his fathers, alongside the kings of Israel, and Zechariah his son became king after him.
